A great website for interesting things and inspiration!

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Hello!

I love to hunt around on the internet and often spend time looking for inspiration for e cards, ideas for recipes, gifts for friends or family or anything else I need an idea boost for!

Anyway, on my internet exploring I came across this great website that you might like called Daily Design Discovery. Each day this lovely website features something new, interesting and beautiful. Recently it has featured things such as an interesting article about an autistic cartoonist in the New York Times, Eames wire-base tables, some sculpture, prints and paintings as well as general beautiful objects such as the restored vintage typewritters by Kasbah Mod and the Vintage Beacon II/Whitehouse Camera.

A yummy salmon and noodle recipe!

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Hi all,

I made this dish not long ago for Nick’s birthday and it was so lovely I just had to share it. It was an aromatic and spicy dish of marinated and fried salmon fillets and singapore noodles with vegetables. It was soo tasty because of all the lovely ingredients, and although there are a lot of ingredients, once you’ve done 10-15 minutes of preparation, its almost ready!

(Nigella's) Seared Salmon with Singapore Noodles

(Nigella's) Seared Salmon with Singapore Noodles

Its a Nigella recipe for and you can find the ingredients and method here. If you’re not keen on salmon you could replace it with chicken which I am sure would be just as delicious! I do love Nigella recipes – are you a fan of hers too? Have you got any Nigella or your own favourite recipes that you want to share?

Autumnal fun

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Hello,

I LOVE this time of year!

Everyone’s back at work/school /university after  summer holidays feeling rested and ready to take on challenges of year ahead. We have Halloween to look forward to plan for followed swiftly by Fireworks night which Plum hates!

The leaves on the trees are turning to their beautiful colours which are wonderful. When they fall I do feel sad, but there is nothing more satisfying than walking though them, kicking them into the air and listening for the crunchy sound under foot. This season really reminds me of being a kid, building dens, the excitement of playing outside in the dark, halloween, bonfire night and the anticipation that Christmas is coming! Its a magical time of year!

A holiday for Racheal and don’t forget to enter the competition!

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Hi all,

Our new(ish) team member Racheal is going off for a well deserved break to a Greek island on Sunday for a week. She’s only been here 3 months but she has done lots to push forward our e cards, including helping me to get this blog up and running more regularly!

I have to say I’m rather jealous of her! I wish we’d had the foresight to book some time off, but with Molly and Joe still at school, we can only have a holiday during the school holidays.

Anyway, whilst she is away I will be getting on with some new e card designs, looking after the competion and answering e card queries. Talking about the competition, I know I have gone on and on about it, but the closing date is not until next Friday so please do enter. Apart from the fantastic £15 Amazon prize, it is also a chance for you to tell me your opinions and have some input into the new cards that are made.

Once again, all you have to do to enter is to choose your favourite Christmas ecard from our collection and then tell us why you like it on the Katies Cards Facebook page. For clearer instructions please take a look here.

Have a nice weekend!

A glamourous exhibition

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Hello!

I haven’t gone to a good exhibition in a while and just had a look around to see what is on and found that there is a very exciting photography exhibition on at the National Portrait Gallery called Glamour of the Gods. The portraits are of hollywood stars from the 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s such as Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Rita Hayworth and Marlon Brando and are all shot in that classic ‘hollywood’ hugely glamourous way.

Rita Hayworth

Rita Hayworth

I will definitely have to get over and see it! Though I will have to be quick as its only on until the 23rd of October!

If anyone has been, do let me know what you thought!

Summer memories and a beautiful tree

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Hi all,

Old news I know but summer has moved over to make space for autumn, which is a little sad for us here in Briton, who didn’t seem to get the summer we wanted. On one of the rare sunny days of the summer, I took this photo of a beautiful tree that I want to share with you. I walk past this tree every day on my walk in Bushy park with Plum and I think its magnificent.

Do you know what type of tree it is? Please comment if you can work it out!

I love trees with red or dark leaves. This photo is a perfect summer scene taken with my phone. There is a deer hiding from the sun under the tree and in the back ground a cricket match is taking place.

Today is Stepfamily day in the US – and don’t forget to enter our competition!

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Hi all,

Today is National Stepfamily day in the United States. The day was set up in 1997 by a lady called Christy Borgeld in order to support stepfamillies of the US nation, helping them to support their children and to support them to become strong family structures.

What a lovely way to recognise the importance of the effort that many step-parents put into making family-life work and a great day to say thank you if you are part of a blended family.

I love days like these, where something that usually goes without recognition is brought to peoples attention.

Anyway, its nearly the weekend and I am really looking forward to having some relaxation after a very busy week! The Katies Cards competition is going well and we have had quite a few entries so far, but the deadline is not until the 30th of September, so if you haven’t already, do make sure that you enter it  for your chance to win a £15 Amazon voucher!

Hi all,

Yesterday was an emotional day for many thousands of people across the globe. The memorial services that took place in New York, all over the US and in London were all dignified and beautiful.

I can’t believe 10 years have passed since that terrible day.

My heart goes out to all who has lost someone because of these terrible acts and I hope you have managed to find happiness and joy after such pain.

Growling in Bushy park… the deers are heading into rutting season

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Hi all,

Today in my daily walk with Plum in Bushy park, I noticed that the deers are beginning to growl and I realised that, being early September, they are getting ready to go into the rutting season.

The noise they make is extraordinary and I remember when Nick and I first heard them we thought there were lions in the park!

If you can be discreet and careful you can watch them though you do have to be extra careful because they can become aggressive towards people (and dogs) if you get too close. The males are beginning to get aggressive now and will begin sparring soon to determine dominance and mating rights within the group. Males also ‘size each other up’ by parallel walking, roaring at each other and clashing antlers all of which is a brilliant sight!

This is a very inspiring and exciting time of year and a time when I start to think about Christmas e card ideas. The deers reminded me of the Seasonal Stag Christmas e-card we have to send at Christmas time which really gets me in the mood to cosy up!

National Organic Month!

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

Hello there,

I know I am a bit behind with this news, but I thought (since you are an eco-friendly e-card fan) you might like to know that September is National Organic month here in the UK. It is a month of celebrating organic growth and produce as well as promoting the benefits.

You can find more about this celebration here National Organic Month along with great info and tips on how to live an organic, eco-friendly lifestyle.

As I’ve said before, I feel like we should all try to do our bit if we can. I know its hard and I do have times when its impossible to make an environmentally friendly choice, but I feel that as long as I am learning about my choices and I am aware, then I am able to make many more good decisions and this has its own tiny affect which makes me happy.

Bumper crop of blackberries in the UK

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Hi all,

Those of you outside of the UK may or may not know, but this years weather has been all over the place; a warmer than average spring as well as a wet and cloudy summer has meant that a lot of brits have been moaning about the weather all summer! Mostly, the view has looked like this:

Katie and Joe walking this summer

Katie and Joe walking this summer

However, there is a plus-side to this weather. These conditions have brought about a swell in blackberries and as well as making more berries this year, the fruit is apparently plumper and juicer than usual! Thats my plans set for this weekend – I am going blackberry picking and I am going to make some beautiful blackberry jam!

Here is a great recipe I have used a few times: Angela’s ‘flexible jam’ recipe.

Hope you like it!
