Friday, October 28th, 2011

Hi all,

I am getting ready for the weekend away but thought I would share this with you before I go.

There will be a new Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition opening at the National Gallery on the 9th of November. It will run until the 5th of February so there is plenty of time for fans of him and his work to visit. You can find out more about this exhibition here. If you can’t get to the National Gallery, don’t worry as there is a new documentary about him that you might get a chance to watch on the 2nd of November for click here for details.

How exciting!

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Half term trips – 2011.10.27

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Hi all,

As its half term, we are planning a trip up to Yorkshire to visit my brother this weekend. He lives in a beautiful part of the country called Hebdon Bridge which is set in the middle of the moors, where we will go on some lovely walks and clear our heads. The town itself is very pretty, with old architecture, cobbled streets and a lovely canal. There are a few nice shops (if you like to go shopping) as well as pubs and restaurants to go to so is a really nice place to go for a little break.

I found the Hebdon Bridge website which has all sorts of information on it about upcoming events, the history of Hebdon Bridge, where to eat, where to stay and other really useful tourist info. It also has a picture gallery where I found some pretty pictures to share:

Pumpkin carving and a seasonal halloween recipe – 2011.10.25

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Hi all,

I am getting more excited by the day about Halloween especially as our new Halloween ecard is so close to being ready!

Our kids are too old now to go trick or treating or have halloween parties like we used to, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t get into the spirit. I still like to carve some pumpkins to put on our doorstep and in the garden or house as they make beautiful seasonal lamps which can last up to 10 days if you soak the finished carving in bleach for 8 hours and then spray with a mild bleach solution each day.

I love to carve a couple and then make yummy pumpkin soup out of the carved flesh. I have used this great recipe a few times before and it is delicious:

Let me know what you think if you get round to trying it!

Celebrating Halloween – 2011.10.24

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Hi all,

Halloween is almost upon us! We are just adding the finishing touches to the new Halloween e card which will be on the website very soon!

I love Halloween. Its such a magical time for children and there is excitement in the air. When my children were younger, we always used to have huge Halloween parties for them with their friends. We would spend all day decorating the the inside and outside of the house and Molly and Joe would be planning and then sculpting their pumpkins for the whole of the half term holiday!

All the effort was worth it, as everyone would have lots of fun. We played halloween games like apple bobbing and a special one that we made up using ringed doughnuts, tying string around the middle and then tying them to the tree outside. The aim of the game was to eat a whole doughnut without using your hands and once we’d crowned the winner,  we would all troop off to trick or treat around our neighbourhood.

I rooted out these old pictures of the parties and the doughnut game:

What do you do for halloween?

Only 9 weeks until Christmas… 2011.10.21

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Picture 1Hi all,

I hate that I have done it – but I checked as I was planning when we could get some of the new Christmas ecards up on the website and did a quick count and I couldn’t believe it. 9 weeks! It was only summer the other day, where has the time gone?!

Oh dear, now I have to start planning gifts, where and who we will be celebrating with and what we’ll be eating. Though there is one thing that I always look forward to – the Katies Cards christmas party! We’re not a big team (as you know) so we often do a joint gathering with the other small businesses who share our little terraced building. There’s only 3 people extra, but it means that our meagre little celebration of 3 turns into 6 (and this year it will be 7 with Racheal here).

Oh dear oh dear. Well, I guess I will start planning this weekend, though no matter when I start, its always a mad rush in the end!

Have you started your preparations yet?

P.s. don’t forget to enter the Katies Cards competition before the 11th of November – you could be in with the chance of having your idea made into a Christmas e card as well as a £15 ($20 Amazon voucher!). Please click here for more details!

Find interesting and new ideas everyday with pinterest – 2011.10.20

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Hi all,

Almost daily, I am discovering new and exciting things on the internet since I began using Pinterest. Its a website that you can use as an online pin board and where lots of other people are putting things on their online pin boards too which you can look at and even add onto your pin board. You can even download a ‘pin it’ button that you can use while you are browsing the internet. The button goes onto your web browsers toolbar and means that you can ‘pin’ anything you see on any website that you like to one of your pin boards!

I know it sounds a bit weird, but it really is a lovely way to spend 20 minutes a day and really simple use (unlike other of these new fangled websites!) and a great way to keep reminders of things that you like in one place in a quick and simple way.

If you are interested, you can also have a look at my pin boards as I have set up my own account and I have been pin-boarding my heart out! Just visit http://pinterest.com/katiescards/ and you will find all of the things I have pinned. If you join yourself, be sure to let me know and we can follow each other!

Hi all,

I have been joining various sites over the past few days, one of which is Tumblr, where I have been adding some information about me and my cards but also having a look around for some interesting and new things that are being added and following them from my profile. Its a great way of finding new and interesting websites, blogs and individuals.

A recent find has been this fantastic website featuring nature photography – http://www.naturegalleries.net/.

There are some utterly stunning photographs on this website, my favourites being the animals and the birds (which i have featured below). Take a look at the website, the pictures are fascinating!

Anyway, I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

An unexpected but very pleasant encounter

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Hi all,

Yesterday I had a very unexpected but very pleasant encounter with another lady who has set up her own business.

The long and short of the story is that someone contacted me yesterday to tell me that there was a Facebook business page (The Supermums Craft Fair) using one of our e card images as a logo (the Supermum birthday e card).

Anyway the most interesting part of this story is that in contacting this person (Sarah) I got to find out what it is that she is doing and its great!

Basically, she has set up The Supermums Craft Fair to replicate craft fairs on Facebook. She makes her own crafts which you can have a look at here and as a craft maker, she has found it hard to make a living out of her produce and decided to set this page up to get other crafters together and help them to sell what they make!

The concept is brilliant, and because its on Facebook and there are no costs, it means even more people who have made crafts can get involved!

I am so happy to have met (online) this clever lady who has this brilliant and innovative idea and encourage all of you to have a look at her page as there are some beautiful handmade knick-knacks on there to buy and if you make crafts yourself, its also definitely worth a go selling them through the page also!

Supermum!

Supermum!

It was such an unexpected but very lovely encounter. I love it when things like this happen (though that is not permission to use any of my images without asking me first – this was a very special case!).

Happy thanksgiving Canada!

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Hello there everyone,

If you are in Canada today you will most probably be getting ready for a lovely traditional thanksgiving meal with friends or family and getting ready to tuck into some delicious roasted turkey and pumpkin pie. I haven’t had pumpkin pie before but have always fancied giving it a go as I love roasted pumpkin and pumpkin soup and obviously this is the best time of year to eat it as its in season here in england!

As ever, before I try out any recipe, I have to do my fair share of hunting around to see if I can find the best recipe, and whilst I was doing that I came across this great article in the Guardian which compares pies made from different ingredients –  which should be very helpful! You can read the full article here. Let me know if you have any tips!

Anyway, hope you’re all having a great day!

Its the weekend!

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Hi all,

Here in England we have had very bizarre weather for this time of year. The beginning of the week was scorching hot and the last couple of days have been freezing, and there was talk of snow in Scotland!

Whatever the weather, I am looking forward to the weekend, spending time with the kids, Nick and Plum and cooking a big roast on Sunday, though I don’t think my yorkshire puddings will turn out as good as the ones in the picture!

What are you up to this weekend?

The loss of creative genius and innovator Steve Jobs

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Hi all,

I imagine that most of us have heard the sad news that co-founder and former chief executive of Apple has lost his battle with Pancreatic cancer at age 56.

This is a truly sad loss for both his friends and family and the world of technology. His innovations have changed the world and changed the way we interact with technology.

You can read more about this story here.

The beast of Bushy park…

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Hi all,

As you may or may not know, I live near the lovely Bushy park and I absolutely  love taking Plum for a walk there. It really helps me to relax and get inspiration for new e cards. Its so beautiful and we’re very lucky to have deer there that we can see when we visit.

I recently wrote a blog post about the deer’s going into to rutting season and that they make loud roaring noises at the beginning of the season and begin to fight each other. When we first moved here, Nick and I couldn’t work out what the sound was as it was soo loud we thought that there were lions in the park!

Recently a few people have been attacked by the deer which doesn’t usually happen. They do give you guidelines on using the park around rutting season, which are basically be careful not to intimidate them, but these attacks appear to be unprovoked. One man was attacked today from 200 yards away and had to be helped by passers-by.

There is speculation that it might be one stag who is attacking and locals have started to call him ‘The Beast of Bushy Park’

World Teachers day tomorrow

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Hi all,

Did you know that tomorrow is World Teachers day?

This day has been celebrated since 1994 and is an opportunity for UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) along with Education International to celebrate the profession and to promote international standards for the teaching profession.

This year’s focus is Teachers for gender equality and is a very important message for people to be made aware of.

Say thank you to your teacher tomorrow with a Katies Cards e card

Say thank you to your teacher tomorrow with a Katies Cards e card

Teachers shape the lives of the majority of our young people and we need to recognise the good work of good teachers out there. Everyone remembers their favourite teacher, so why not send them a thank you e card to celebrate World Teachers day?
