Can you spot all of the film references in this Valentines Day ecard? 2012.01.30

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Hi all,

Valentines Day is on my mind as we only have about 2 weeks to go!

I made the ‘I Love Ewe’ Valentines Day ecard a few years ago. I wanted to make a light-hearted and humurous card that could be sent to the one you love, but also to anyone on this special day to raise a smile. The e card was made up of a series of references to famous romantic films – can you spot them? Take a look, the first person to tell me how many and what film they are from (by posting a comment on this blog) gets a free 1 year subscription!

Hi all,

Those of you who are a fan of our Facebook page will have seen yesterday that I shared a fantastic photograph of a letter written on behalf on Lily Robinson aged 3 and a half to Sainbury’s about their Tiger bread and a wonderful response from Sainsbury’s (see below):

Correspondence from Lily to Sainsbury's

Correspondence from Lily to Sainsbury's

This gave me great joy to see and I just had to share it with all the Katie’s Cards Facebook fans immediately (one of the benefits of being a Facebook fan is I share little snippets of fun like this as well as news and updates about Katie’s Cards. If you would like to become a fan then please click on this link – Katie’s Cards Fan Page and press the ‘like’ button at the top of the page) because I thought it was an excellent example of really great customer service. The type that puts a smile on someone’s face and the type that I hope to emulate here at Katie’s Cards.

We’ve all been in a position at one point or another whereby our expectations have not been met when purchasing a service or product. It is not a positive experience and can leave you feeling unsatisfied. When buying something online I believe its even more important to feel like there is a human at the end of your transaction. It instills confidence and comfort to know that you can ask a person to explain something to you if the need ever occur.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with anyone who didn’t see my post yesterday. It brought a smile to my face and I’m sure it will to yours!

Oldie (birthday e card) but still a goodie! 2012.01.25.

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Hi all,

I came across this old birthday ecard and thought I would share it with you!

I can remember when we made this, I thought it was a fun idea – imagine a real-life machine like that at home making birthday cakes for you! It reminds me of the elaborate machines that are used by Wallace to get out of bed, make tea and toast etc. in Wallace and Gromit!

I hope you enjoy it. Please share your ideas for new birthday ecards with me – I would love to hear what you would like to see more of!

Birthday fun. 2012.01.24.

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Hi all,

Light hearted fun always makes people feel cheerful around any occasion, let alone their birthday. That is why we like to make a wide selection of birthday ecards of all different styles, including cheerful and fun styles for you to choose from. A great way to have some fun is to take a look at this fun website which calculates the number 1 song on the day that you were born. My song was Wonderland by The Shadows, you can find out yours by clicking here to visit the website.

All you have to do is add in your date of birth and then click on the flag of the country you are from and it will then list the song! You can even then click through to buy a specially framed and personalised record as a gift! They are quite expensive though so probably not something you will buy for everyone. Anyway – thought it was a fun thing to share with you!

Please leave a comment and let me know what your song is! Below is a fun birthday e card from Katie’s Cards that you might like to send to someone who has a birthday coming up. I hope you like it!

How do you romance your Valentine? 2012.01.23.

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Hi all,

I’m sure you all know that Valentines day is a matter of weeks away (3 to be precise).

This day is celebrated across the globe by millions of people who send romantic messages to their lovers or mysterious  messages to those they admire from afar. Many people like to shower the ones they love with gifts of love poems, flowers, chocolates and an assortment of other gifts as well as spend a romantic evening together either in a restaurant, hotel or at home with special food, candles and champagne.

Valentines day does not need to be about lavishing expensive gifts, if you have a little time to plan, you can do something very romantic without spending £100’s of pounds. Here are some ideas of my own that you might like. I hope you find them useful, and please comment if you have any ideas you would like to share!

Katie’s top tips for an inventive, romantic, cost-effective Valentines day:

  • Collect together some photographs of the special moments in your relationship and put them together into an album as a keepsake. You can make a beautiful and smart photo-book here at tesco.com. They cost from £5.
  • If you are poetic, then write the one you love a poem and incorporate it into your Valentines day ecard, print it onto some pretty paper and give it as a gift or hide it somewhere that your loved-one will find it. If you’re not poetic, take a look here for some ideas for romantic poems.
  • Plan a special Valentines meal. Make sure to include your guest’s favourite food, or if you want to try something different take a browse through BBC food’s ideas for Valentines day menu’s here.
  • Do one small thing on Valentines day that is unexpected. Send flowers, plan a ad-hoc dinner, meet your loved-one after work and escort them home, buy a bottle of something sparkling to have with dinner (you can get your hands on some great Prosecco’s which are much cheaper than champagne and taste fantastic – I actually prefer it to champagne)
  • Dress up your dinner table to look romantic, buy a couple of roses to scatter the petals on the table cloth, rose scented pot-pouri and candles will look fantastic and fairly low cost
  • Get your kids involved! Here are some great tips on how to get your kids involved with this celebration – they can make cards and gift boxes as well as table decorations!

I hope you like these ideas!

Chinese New Year – how you can take part in the celebrations. 2012.01.16.

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Hi all,

Chinese New Year is approaching and this year is going to be celebrated on the 23rd of January. The coming year is the year of the dragon, which is exciting as Chinese mythology associates dragons with luck, power and strength.

This is a fantastic time to send your loved ones greetings (don’t forget to take a look at our collection of Chinese new year e cards) as well as to get involved with the celebrations, either by visiting a local parade (many cities will have street events planned for this occasion click here for some information on what is happening across the globe here) or by getting into the spirit with their own loved ones.

Ancient Chinese legends suggest that the first New Year began with a fight against ‘Nian’ – a mythical creature who would terrorise villagers, visiting on the first day of the new year and eating crops, livestock and villagers. People began to leave food outside of their door for this creature, and soon realised that it did not hunt for anything else if it had food. They also realised that the creature was scared of the colour red and from then on, people have left red lanterns and spring rolls outside of their doors to warn Nian away.

This fantastic event is celebrated for a number of days but many famillies will get together for a dinner on new years eve. This dinner will include many traditional fish and chicken dishes, as well as dumplings, mandarin oranges, melon, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, noodles and many other dishes. There are also an exchange of gifts of sweets and foods between friends and neighbours as well as the giving of red envelopes containing money from elders to the young.

This is a magical celebration full of tradition and myth and great fun to get involved with. If you want to hold your own celebration, here are my tips:

  • Visit your local Chinese supermarket to buy some red lanterns to hang outside of your home, or if you do not have somewhere you can go locally – there are some beautiful ones available to buy online here at Asianideas.com
  • Make some interesting and pretty cards that you can put on the table which contain some facts about the origins, myths and traditions of the Chinese New Year. A great way to get kids involved, you can ask them to make or just decorate the cards by researching the myths and traditions themselves.
  • Make some of your own fresh and crispy spring rolls. You can hang some outside (kids will love doing that) or just have them with your wonderful dinner. Here is a great recipe I found by Ching-He Huang
  • Make a selection of other traditional dishes to celebrate with your loved ones. Click here for a fantastic list of recipes that you might like, alternatively you could try finding somewhere to buy pre-made food or order in (if you can find anywhere that is open!)
  • An alternative to gift-giving for your guests is to buy red envelopes for each of your dinner guests (you will find them in your local stationary store or if not you can get a great selection here on Amazon) and fill them with some chocolate coins. This is a cheap yet fun way to honor the tradition.
  • Ask your dinner guests to dress in red
  • Add more excitement to your celebration by setting off fireworks (safely) in your garden

I hope you have a fantastic time celebrating!

Please do share any tips of advice by commenting, I love to have your feedback.
