Easter time – hot cross buns. 2012.02.17.

Delicious hot cross buns

Delicious hot cross buns

I don’t know about you but I do love a hot cross bun. They are absolutely delicious.

Years ago, you couldn’t buy them in the shops until Easter time, but now you can buy them year round. Actually, there was a time that they nearly stopped being made altogether. It is reported by some that they were considered to have a dangerous hold over Catholics and Protestant England tried to ban the production of them altogether. This was stopped by Elizabeth I who passed a law allowing bakers to sell them at Easter and on Christmas.

A few interesting superstitions surround the hot cross bun. One belief is that if they are made on Good Friday, they will not spoil for a year and another encourages people to keep one stored for medicinal purposes. It is thought that a hot cross bun that is shared with someone will help your friendship endure the coming year (this comes from a saying “Half for you, half for me, between us two, goodwill shall be”). They are also believed to protect against shipwrecks, fires and baking bad bread and, should always be kissed before being eaten.

What a wonderful celebratory dish, seeped in history and tradition.

Interesting Mothers day facts. 2012.02.06.

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in one way or another since Roman times. Back then the celebration was called Hilaria and was in honor of the mother goddess Cybele. Over time this celebration developed into the religious holiday Laetare Sunday in which people would visit their ‘Mother Church’ or local Cathedral on the 4th Sunday in Lent to worship.

The celebration of Laetare Sunday was pre 1920’s and therefore before the introduction of workers holidays. Most workers would be allowed to take the day off from their job to visit church on this day, making it one of the only days of the year that whole families would get together. The popularity of this holiday died out by the 1920’s and in 1914 Mothering Sunday began to be celebrated. The change was inspired by movements in America by Ann Jarvis to help support mothers who had lost their sons and husbands at war and was spearheaded in the UK by Constance Penwick-Smith.

Soon after the occasion became commercial (much to the dismay of Ann Jarvis who spent her life campaigning again the commercialisation of mothers day) and many began to send mothers day cards and gifts.

Today the tradition is as popular as its ever been with world wide sales of over £100 billion on Mothers day gifts and cards. It is easy to know why this holiday is so popular, this special person in our life is the only one (other than our father) that will love us unconditionally, has always been there for us and has sacrificed something so that they could provide for us. It is definitely a day to say thank you by sending a Mothers day e card, cooking a delicious meal for her, booking her a pedicure or simply taking her a bunch of tulips.

For those of you who don’t know – Mothers day is on the 18th of March this year!

You lift me up. A cute Valentines Day e card. 2012.02.02.

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

When we made this cute Valentines Day ecard I wanted to symbolise the idea that being around someone that you love, who loves you back, can help you to be a more positive person and bring out the best in you. I also wanted a way of animating the age old saying that ‘opposites attract’ which is how I came up with the idea of using a tall lady Giraffe and a chubby little wild boar.

The wild boar finds a way to show the lovely lady Giraffe his gift of a romantic bunch of flowers and with help from Cupid, wins the Giraffes’ heart.

We have a whole range of different Valentines day ecards to choose from so take a browse through our online collection.

I hope you enjoy sending them as much as we have enjoyed making them.

Why do we egg-hunt at Easter time? 2012.02.01

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

The custom of egg hunting has become a fun game that is played by children at Easter time all over the world who believe that the Easter Bunny has hidden chocolate eggs for them to find.

Having looked around at various pieces of information on Easter I have found that there are strong symmetries between religion and folklore. It is easy to understand why the egg would symbolise spring being a new beginning, but in Christianity the egg also symbolises the resurrection. The events origins are different for different cultures, religions and countries but the celebrations and symbolism attached to them are all the same or very similar.

I have found a number of explanations regarding the egg hunt, one of them being that the custom was carried from Germany (where their Osterhase (a hare) would lay her eggs in baskets that German children would leave outside of their homes) to America. It is thought that once German immigrants arrived in America the activity transformed slowly into what it is now. I also read that the act of egg hunting came about around the time of the rise of Christianity over paganism. I have read two versions of this rumour, one suggesting Christians were persecuted by Pagans and one that said the opposite. According to the rumour, the victims who were either Christians or Pagans were found and persecuted for practising their religion. They celebrated their custom by burying eggs instead of exchanging them and were found by their tormentors who bribed children to look for eggs buried around homes and on land. When an egg was found, the owner of the land would then be persecuted for following Paganism/Christianity.

Today, this fun filled tradition is celebrated by people all over the world, unaware of what made their ancestors begin doing these things. It brings joy to so many people along with the rest of the vast array of modern day Easter practices which now includes sending of Easter e cards. I wonder what customs we will take with us into the future and what they will evolve into in years to come?
