Three Beautiful Christmas Images on Pinterest

Sunday, December 23rd, 2012

We’ve been avidly using Pinterest over the past few months and it’s a great site, especially at this time of year when it can be a fun way of finding new festive recipes or DIY gift ideas. I’ve loved collecting Christmas and winter images, it makes me feel so festive and some of them really evoke the magic of this time of year.

As we’re getting closer to Christmas I thought I would share some of my favourite images with you to really get you in the festive mood.

There are so many occasions for sparklers at Christmas and New Year – that’s why I love this image. Warm gloves, cold weather and the crackle of sparklers. Lovely.

Of course, I had to pick one of our Christmas ecards. This ecard reminds me of the deer in the park near our offices.

The main benefits of sending Christmas ecards this year

Saturday, December 22nd, 2012

Christmas is a busy time. With all the organisation, the parties and the present buying you’ll always forget to send someone (or everyone) a Christmas card.

Jingle Bell Jive

More people than ever are sending Christmas ecards and there are many benefits of doing so:

  • Speed – there is nothing faster to send and receive than an ecard; it is practically instant.
  • Cost – Most subscription fees are minimal and for the cost of approximately two printed cards and postage you can send unlimited ecards.
  • Social – many people enjoy receiving their ecard on Facebook. You can post the card on their wall or send it in a message so they can view your greetings in a social media account they access multiple times a day.
  • Last minute – there are no last postage dates for ecards. You can send it all the way up to Christmas Day (or even on the big day itself!) and your friends and family will still receive it in time.
  • Animated – unlike a paper card, an ecard can be animated meaning it’s fun, dynamic and entertaining.
  • Interactive – an ecard can be a game to while away the hours at Christmas.
  • Sound & music – there is nothing more festive than Christmassy songs and sound effects and Christmas ecards can really capture the spirit of Christmas by playing your favourite Christmas songs as you view them.

There are many benefits to sending Christmas ecards and it’s not too late to send your ecards with Katie’s Cards now.

Five ideas to keep the peace this Christmas

Friday, December 21st, 2012

With the hussle and bussle of visitors and the rush of house guests, Christmas can be a stressful time. When all the family are at home it’s easy for tensions to rise and emotions to boil over.

Christmas Tree Ecard

To help you through this festive period here are our five top tips to help keep the peace:

1. Have a family meeting

Sit everyone down and discuss the plans over the Christmas period. Agree some rules and be clear about what’s going to happen and what’s expected from everyone.

2. Keep them occupied

Being busy usually helps distract kids from bickering. Give them things to do such as peeling the vegetables, doing a quiz, drawing or reading. However, don’t feel like you have to fill all of their free time. There are plenty of distractions at Christmas, so don’t pressurise yourself.

3. Keep rivals separate

Try to keep the people who may cause arguments separate from each other. Make sure they are in separate groups and, if they’re adults, reduce the drink you give them.

4. Be positive

A friendly, positive attitude always helps maintain a positive household. If you’re moody then it is likely they will be too, so keep positive and smile.

5. Random acts of kindness

There is nothing more disarming than being surprised by kindness. So give plenty of compliments and show compassion in the face of a bad attitude. Not only will it make you feel better but it will also help to defuse tense situations.

Finally, you could even use a Katie’s Cards ecard to say thank you and to surprise people with a nice gesture…You can see our full range of thank you ecards here on the Katie’s Cards website.

Our top three funny ecards to send this winter

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Christmas is a fun, jolly time of year. Well, that’s the theory anyway. However, how many cards do you receive that are, if you’re honest, a little bit boring? This year, why not inject some fun into Christmas by sending one of our humorous animated Christmas ecards. We’ve listed our top three funny Christmas ecards below:

1. Turkey Olympics

The Olympic Games was the highlight of 2012 for many people and the Turkey Olympics ecard celebrates this. The turkeys in this card are trying to escape their inevitable festive fate and only some serious Olympian efforts will help them.

2. The Night Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse….’ Hang on a minute, there is a mouse stirring in this ecard. This card follows one mischievous mouse as it climbs up the Christmas tree to hug the angel at the top.

3. Lob the Leader

This political game let you throw snowballs at your favourite (or not so favourite) party leader. You can choose from David Cameron, Ed Milliband or Nick Clegg. You’ll have to be fast though because they duck and hide very quickly. Let them have it!

The Great Christmas Tree Debate

Friday, December 7th, 2012

We at Katie’s Cards are always exploring ways in which we can continue to be as environmentally friendly as possible and it’s something we’ve commented on in recent blog posts. The Christmas tree is an iconic image of the holiday season and features on a selection of our ecards, so we decided to investigate whether real or artificial trees are more eco-friendly.

Christmas Tree Ecard

Real Christmas trees were the clear winner due to the fact that they are biodegradable and recyclable and are often grown on farms aware of their potential environmental impact. Artificial trees, on the other hand, are non-recyclable and must either be left to rot in a landfill or burnt. They are often made in factories with lax environmental rules and transported around the world, therefore racking up a large carbon footprint.

Needless to say, the Katie’s Cards Team was delighted with the outcome and look forward  to once again having that wonderful piney Christmas tree scent wafting around the office…

Two Days Until Hanukkah!

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

This year the Jewish festival of lights, Hanukkah, is celebrated from December 8th until the 16th. It is celebrated by the lighting of one candle each day on an eight-stemmed candelabrum known as a Hanukiah. The festival is observed in Jewish homes by the kindling of lights on each of the festival’s eight nights: one on the first night, two on the second night and so on. Children also play games using a dreidel as a way of remembering the miracle.

Hanukkah

We have some beautiful Hanukkah ecards on the Katie’s Cards website so why not send an electronic greeting card to your friends and family this year? By sending an ecard, you are saving money and the environment at the same time and you can pre-schedule them now to make sure they arrive on time.

How to make your wedding day more environmentally friendly

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

At a time when many people are becoming more aware of environmental and ethical issues, we at Katie’s Cards have put together a few tips about how to make your wedding day as environmentally friendly and as ethical as possible:

  1. Food glorious food – Source locally produced, seasonal food. This cuts down on food miles and helps reduce your carbon footprint.
  2. Favours – I think it’s best to keep favours simple and elegant. Ethical wedding supplier Natural Design has a beautiful range, all of which can be customised: a little cherry blossom napkin ring, sprigs of lavender tied to a hand-crafted paper rose, or a rosebud heart would add a romantic touch to any wedding table. What’s more, the tags are 100% recycled and all of their rosebuds are hand crafted from eco-friendly saa paper.
  3. Flowers – if using fresh flowers, try to source locally grown flowers in season rather than imported flowers. Or choose a bouquet of paper wedding flowers that would provide you with a lasting memento of your big day.
  4. The name place cards – Make sure they’re made out of paper or card that’s 100% recycled and is FSC certified. Alternatively, if you live near a beach, why not pick up some pebbles and use a calligraphy pen to write the name of each guest on an individual stone. These give a lovely personal touch and are a nice memento for each guest to take home.
  5. Invitations – By choosing to send an eco-friendly e card invitation instead of paper cards you can reduce your carbon footprint. No fuel is needed to buy or deliver the cards and no resources are needed to manufacture the cards.
  6. And, finally, when buying your dress, choosing your venue and deciding upon your decorations, try to support fair trade by researching suppliers who practice equal pay, treat their workers well and are environmentally friendly.

Paper Wedding Flowers

Natural Design creates beautiful, eco-friendly wedding favours, paper flowers, decorations and stationery. Please see their website for further information www.naturaldesign.co.uk
