Pre-packaged outfits and witches hats are fine if you don’t mind turning up at a party wearing the same costume as eight other people. Thursday, August 6th, 2015

We saw an interesting article in the paper today that explained how friends and family are opting to send online greetings such as ecards to loved ones as a more creative option for Birthdays. Now we may be a little biased, but with fun, engaging animations on offer for all ages, with the option to customise with your own message, we’re inclined to agree.

Raise a Glass for Dad

Thursday, June 4th, 2015

Father’s Day is just three weeks away so we thought we’d start sharing some tips and on how you can make Dad’s day. Over the years he’s done all he can to make sure you’re well looked after so making the most of this this once annual opportunity to show thanks is very important . With this in mind, we’ve put together a few ideas that could mean the perfect recipe for a successful Father’s Day.

Organising a family get together

Whether it’s a home cooked meal or a family outing, sometimes it’s just nice when everyone’s together. With three weeks to go there’s plenty of time to rally the troops and plan something nice for the main man in your life.

Join in with one of his hobbies

Whether he likes a spot of fishing, a game of golf or a kick around with a football, it’s always nice to have a companion when doing your favourite things.

Gifts

If you’re not really into planning events, sometimes there’s nothing better than receiving a gift. While we’re sure your presence and undivided attention is enough to fulfill his day, a gift never hurt anyone. Get creative with something he might like, or that would come in handy for him and surprise him with it on the day.

The Perfect Card

Sending a card is the perfect opportunity to express your gratitude for him and is the most important factor in celebrating Dad’s everywhere. When you send a Father’s Day e-card, you can let your Dad know exactly how much he means to you. Whether you want to remind him of a hobby with one of our sporting ecards, or just to tell him he’s The Perfect Dad, you’ll find exactly the card to suit him at Katie’s Cards.

Father's Day Ecard

‘The Perfect Dad’ Father’s Day Ecard

Another great thing about our Father’s Day ecards is that whether you’re across the globe or down the road, you can send one of our greetings in an instant.  While planning an outing or giving a gift is a lovely addition, the most important thing to remember on Father’s Day is to let him know how grateful you are for all the hard work he’s put in over the years – and what better way than a personalised ecard straight to his inbox.

If you’ve got a busy Birthday month this June, don’t forget to check out our huge collection of animated Birthday ecards.

Mother’s Day – Our Turn To Show We Care

Monday, March 2nd, 2015

Last week, the eyes of the world (ours included) were on the glitziest of all annual award ceremonies: The Oscars.

During the ceremony, Patricia Arquette was awarded one of the coveted golden statues for her role as single mother, Olivia Evans, in the film Boyhood.

In her acceptance speech she praised mother’s everywhere and called for equal rights for women:

“To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America.”

This inspirational speech and our realisation that Mother’s Day in the UK is just around the corner, got us thinking about Mum – about just how much she does and sacrifices without ever asking for anything in return.

Mothering Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to show some gratitude to our superhero mums, who, whether we’re 3 or 33 keep on looking out for us.

One day a year is never enough to truly repay them for putting up with the trials, tribulations, tantrums and teenage years that they’re subjected to but we think saying ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ with a thoughtful e card and a bunch of flowers is good place to start.

Our Mother’s Day ecards are unique from anything you’ll find in a card store, with beautiful animations and a wide variety of designs, there’s something for every Mum in our range.

To send your ecard for Mother’s Day today, sign up for a Katie’s Cards Membership, choose your card, personalise with a heartfelt message and schedule for Sunday 15th March.

Recycling Facts That Could Save the World

Thursday, July 17th, 2014

Debates surrounding our environment and how we can care for it are rifer than ever before. While there are many supporters of the environmentally friendly, green living movement, there is also an understandable consensus that the acts of a single individual will not be enough to make an impact in the grand scheme of things. It really isn’t easy being green, or is it? If we each reduce our footprint on the planet by recycling and reusing resources, the effects could be much more effective than we think. So, we’ve scoured the web for some of the most mind blowing facts that prove how big of an effect a small ‘individual’ change can have.

  1. Recycling 1 can of aluminium provides enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours.
  2. Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrel of oil, and 4000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
  3. Food waste disposed of in landfills creates large quantities of methane gas, which contribute towards greenhouse gasses and global warming. By capturing the bio gas from just 1 tonne of food waste, 1 tonne of carbon dioxide emissions are prevented from entering the atmosphere. To put this in perspective; 1.3 billion tonnes of food waste is produced every year.
  4. An estimated 2.6 billion holiday cards are sold each year in the United States. Enough to fill a football field 10 stories high. If we each sent one less card, we’d save 50,000 cubic yards of paper.

paper

Ultimately, recycling is necessary. It not only has huge impacts on the environment, it creates awareness and forces us to acknowledge limitations of what we use and how much we waste. If you’re thinking of ways you can help have an impact, well, we have just the answer…

ENTER, THE ECARD.

See the thing is, sending an ecard enables you to show a loved one you care, while also translating an important ecological message, which in turn equates to the promotion of the health of our planet. So for the next holiday or celebration, send a Birthday ecard, Christmas ecards, Halloween ecards and others at Katie’s Cards and make a big change.

Floral Ecard Inspiration from Hampton Court

Thursday, July 10th, 2014

It’s the final day of the Hampton Court Flower Show this Sunday (13th July).

The Hampton Court Flower Show is a great event where people come from miles around to look at the incredible displays and get top tips from the heroes of the horticultural world.

And all this  happens, every year, just down the road from our little office in Teddington.

But apart from the traffic disruption and the definite increase in bewildered-looking passengers on the public transport system – it was only today that we realised the true impact of this annual tradition on our collection of e cards.

The floral can be found throughout the majority of the categories on Katie’s Cards. Perhaps with the exception of the Christmas ecards – where the snowflakes and fir trees replace the need for flowers and lush, bucolic vistas.

It’s usually about this time of year that we tend to add a few more summery ecards. In the past, this included the ‘Flowers’ and ‘Terrace’ Birthday ecards, along with our ‘Gardener’ anniversary e greeting.

Yes, it’s quite clear that we’re partial to a posy – and as it’s that time of year again, remember to keep your ear to the flower beds for more new ecards featuring all things floral courtesy of Katie’s Cards.

Ramadan Mubarak

Friday, June 27th, 2014

Ramadan is celebrated in the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and is intended for focus on prayer, spirituality, charity and purification of the body and mind through abstinence. Share this annual occasion with loved ones and wish them well by sending one of our Ramadan ecards.

With Ramadan beginning this Sunday, all of us here at Katie’s Cards wish you the best of luck with your abstinence over the coming month. I’m sure there are some of us who will be joining you in a little late night food binges!

Stamp Out Postal Costs with Ecards

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014

Recently, the Guardian reported that Royal Mail share prices had dropped rapidly following the privatisation of the postal service last year.

The article also reports a drop in the sending of letters and cards in favour of online methods of communication.

And with the recent rise in stamp prices, meaning that a book of 12 first class stamps now costs £7.44, it’s not hard to see why.

When you tally the number of Birthdays, annual occasions like Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day along with one-off celebrations such as Weddings and Births that occur in the calendar, annual membership with Katie’s Cards at £7.50 (just 6 pence more than a book of stamps) seems very reasonable – especially considering that this allows the sending of unlimited ecards to friends and relatives all year round.

But we’re not just advocates of ecards because they save money or because they’re kind to the planet – even though that IS another reason why we love them so much – but they also save time and worrying too:

You can send ecards to individuals or to many. You can send them near and far in an instant. Or, schedule for a later date if that suits.

The point is you don’t have to wonder whether your Auntie’s Get Well Soon card got lost in the post or whether your brother’s Birthday card will arrive by air mail to Australia in time.

So if you find the time, head over to our ecard categories and consider stamping out postal costs for good.

We’ve got a great selection of animated ecards, including some lesser-spotted greetings for occasions such as Canada Day, Ramadan and Grandparents Day

100 Years of Mother’s Day

Friday, May 9th, 2014

For those of us who celebrate Mom’s Day in March, our day of thanks has passed. Don’t worry though, we haven’t forgotten that in just two short days many of you across the globe will be celebrating the special lady in your life. This year isn’t just any old annual celebration of mom, its the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day. But hey, no pressure…

She’s endured sleepless nights, tantrums,  and probably been given advice about raising you from people who couldn’t raise an orchid. Let’s face it she deserves the best. So in light of all this, we thought we’d break down our top 3 Mom’s Day e-cards that will definitely count towards an appreciative token of love,

Number #1

The Supermum ecard is definitely one for the good books. This animated ecard shows how super moms really can be!

Easter Ecards: How Do We Do It?

Monday, April 14th, 2014

With so many ecards for so many different occasions, you might wonder where we get all our ideas from.

Well most of the time, it all starts with a bit of a brainstorming session here at KC headquarters. We get a cuppa (and maybe a couple of biscuits) sit down, talk it over and eventually we’ll have something of an idea of what we want; what it’s for, what the wording of the greeting will be, what happens and how we want it to look.

And sometimes, we don’t even come up with the idea at all.

In 2012, we created the ‘Easter Sunday’ ecard in response to various requests from our members to provide a more religious Easter greeting.

Celebrate Easter with the Easter Sunday Ecard From Katie's Cards

Celebrate Easter with the Easter Sunday Ecard From Katie’s Cards

It was a great success. And since then we’ve been really keen for our members to let us know when they can’t find the right card or if they think there’s something we’ve missed from our range.

We’d hate to think our members might feel restricted by the designs we offer because we’re truly dedicated to providing a good alternative to the paper greetings card – which means making sure that there’s enough categories and cards to suit every taste.

So whether you want to comment below, get in touch via our Facebook page, by email, phone or post – we’d love to hear if you think there’s something we could add to make your job of picking the right card a bit easier.

In the meantime, if you’re thinking about sending an Easter card to family and friends near and far, take a look at the rest of our Easter category and don’t forget that membership allows you to send unlimited cards in an instant or for a date in the future.

It’s almost Mother’s Day- a day where we show our gratitude for all the hard work our mother has put in over the years. This gratitude however, cannot be proven with love alone, oh no. It must be proven (and subsequently measured) in the very real form of the ideal gift and card. A gift and card so ideal, it negates 364 days of smug thanklessness.

Let’s face it, it’s a challenge. Finding the perfect gift and card that says just what you want it to say can be oh I don’t know, hard work… to say the least. We must venture out, in to the cold winds, suffer through inside out umbrellas and scour the shops, because she’s worth it (begrudgingly).

Now, we can’t help you out with the gift side of things but we can most certainly help with the card part, oh yes.

So for all those after school activities she took you to that you never had any intention of pursuing, take a look through our Mother’s Day Ecards at Katie’s Cards and find something that’s ideal for her.

Cheesy Valentine

Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

A couple of weeks ago we mentioned that we were in the process of developing a new Valentine’s Day card. Today, we’re very excited to share with you information about the design process along with sneak previews and artist’s sketches of our new ecard.

Coming up with the idea

The very first thing we do before we start to design an ecard is put our heads together and try to determine what we want to achieve in terms of story and in relation to the specific celebration. With this ecard we were all fairly certain that we wanted to create something that was a bit light-hearted and that our members could share with anyone, including friends – and those who they’d like to be a bit more – without being too embarrassed. So right off the bat, we knew that we were going to have to adopt a humorous approach and came up with the idea of using the cheesiest puns possible to make recipients chuckle/groan. The “cheesy” element eventually manifested into a cute little character whose actions would match the pun. In the preview below, the toe-curling pun ‘I wheelie like you’ has our ‘Mr Cheese’ character riding across the screen on a bike.

Mr Cheese in our latest Valentine's Day Ecard

Mr Cheese in our latest Valentine’s Day Ecard

Choosing the perfect puns

We’re suckers for a good pun (just check out our ‘A whole lotta pun’ Pinterest board if you don’t believe us) so we thought long and hard about what which would work best. Ecards need to get their message across quickly and we soon realised that the puns would need to use no more than four words and also involve a variety of interesting props for ‘Mr Cheese’ to interact with.

Developing the look

We were keen on using a simple but stylistic design so after we’d settled on our puns, we did some sketches based on how we wanted the ecard to look. And then we were ready to go. Of course there were changes during the design process; two of the puns we’d chosen ended up using similar props so we eventually changed the action of one of them to avoid repetition. Below shows the artist’s sketch for the pun ‘I dig you’ and a preview from the existing animation which has ‘Mr Cheese’ operating a similar piece of equipment to accompany the pun ‘You move me’ – in this instance we changed the prop and action from the first sketch and kept the idea from second.

cheese-i-dig

Initial sketch for ‘I dig you’

Animation

The animation followed on from the design sketches, first with the development of a rough-cut and then a period of meticulously editing the actions of the various moving elements to create a smooth and realistic animation. And whilst all this was going on, the search for the right soundtrack began…

Finding the music

It’s a surprisingly time consuming job to find the right sample of music to accompany an ecard. But after listening to hundreds of possible soundtracks, we found the right fit. Again, the tone was light-hearted and upbeat and worked well with the movement of the animation. A few more tweaks and the card was ready for final sign off and is now has pride of place in the Valentine’s Day category on Katie’s Cards.

And whilst we normally don’t like to toot our own horn, we think this ecard is really Gouda!

(Sorry)

Age is Just a Number

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

When birthdays are just around the corner, kids love telling anyone who’ll listen how old they are.

And although this changes ever so slightly as we get older, we want to share in the excitement of your little one’s milestone birthday with the introduction of our age-specific range of ecards for children.

If you’ve been following our blog, you might recall when announced the introduction of this new selection and the sneak previews and sketches we uploaded during the design process.

Well, we’re very pleased to announce that this range is now up and running in the birthday ecard category and available for members to preview and send.

Take look at the third in our range of age specific ecards which uses simple shapes and block colours for the greeting, as well as a catchy soundtrack:

The ‘3rd Birthday Fish’ ecard features a school of brightly coloured fish as they swim into frame, letting out air bubbles as they go. One of the bubbles contains the number three, which grows in size to create part of the ‘Happy Birthday’ message.

Since added, the age-specific range for children is already proving popular and we’re now looking to extend this range to cover ‘special age’ ecards for both teenagers and adults in the very near future…

…Meaning, soon there will be no escape from those annual reminders of just how old we’re all getting!

Until then, we hope you enjoy taking a look at the new designs.

Happy New New Year

Friday, January 24th, 2014

If you’re a regular visitor to Katie’s Cards you might have noticed by looking at our homepage that we’ve added a couple more designs to the Chinese New Year category, ready for the celebrations which take place from January 31st.

KCchinese-scrolls

Why the Long Face?

You might have also seen that the horse features quite heavily in a few of our designs… No we’ve not all turned into hippomaniacs (people obsessed with horses, apparently) but we did think it would be quite fitting as 2014 marks The Year of the Horse in the Chinese Zodiac.

And while we’re here bragging about all our new designs, we might as well tell you that we’re currently in the process of designing a rather special Valentine’s Day card too – so look out for further blog posts on the design process as well as a couple of sneak previews.

If you happen to be in London during the most celebrated Chinese festival, take a look at Time Out’s Guide to Chinese New Year 2014.

But wherever you are in the world, we hope you have a very Happy Chinese New Year.
