The Environmentally Friendly You

Tuesday, April 21st, 2015

Today is Earth Day; a day where events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Protecting our planet is so important and there are so many ways we can go about doing it. While our team here at Katie’s Cards can’t help with every way, we can certainly help with one. Sending ecards is an environmentally friendly way of wishing your friends and family your best wishes for a number of annual events, all while saving paper – and money.

A Snippet of our Earth Day Ecard; Spread the Word

When you think about the number of paper cards you send out every year, that adds up to an awful lot of paper. At Katie’s Cards we don’t just have Birthday ecards, oh no, we also have a huge range of Christmas ecards and greetings for loads of other annual occasions. With a Katie’s Cards membership giving you unlimited sending, just think how much paper, and how many trees, you could be saving.

Now we’re not just advocates of ecards because they’re so kind to the planet, although that’s the main reason we love them –  they also save time. You can send ecards to individuals or to many. You can send them near and far in an instant. Or schedule for a later date if that suits. The point is you can protect the planet with small changes, which are actually beneficial to you. There’s no need to worry if mums Mother’s Day card will get lost in the post, send with Katie’s Cards in an instant.

Recycling Facts That Could Save the World

Thursday, July 17th, 2014

Debates surrounding our environment and how we can care for it are rifer than ever before. While there are many supporters of the environmentally friendly, green living movement, there is also an understandable consensus that the acts of a single individual will not be enough to make an impact in the grand scheme of things. It really isn’t easy being green, or is it? If we each reduce our footprint on the planet by recycling and reusing resources, the effects could be much more effective than we think. So, we’ve scoured the web for some of the most mind blowing facts that prove how big of an effect a small ‘individual’ change can have.

  1. Recycling 1 can of aluminium provides enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours.
  2. Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrel of oil, and 4000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
  3. Food waste disposed of in landfills creates large quantities of methane gas, which contribute towards greenhouse gasses and global warming. By capturing the bio gas from just 1 tonne of food waste, 1 tonne of carbon dioxide emissions are prevented from entering the atmosphere. To put this in perspective; 1.3 billion tonnes of food waste is produced every year.
  4. An estimated 2.6 billion holiday cards are sold each year in the United States. Enough to fill a football field 10 stories high. If we each sent one less card, we’d save 50,000 cubic yards of paper.

Ultimately, recycling is necessary. It not only has huge impacts on the environment, it creates awareness and forces us to acknowledge limitations of what we use and how much we waste. If you’re thinking of ways you can help have an impact, well, we have just the answer…

ENTER, THE ECARD.

See the thing is, sending an ecard enables you to show a loved one you care, while also translating an important ecological message, which in turn equates to the promotion of the health of our planet. So for the next holiday or celebration, send a Birthday ecard, Christmas ecards, Halloween ecards and others at Katie’s Cards and make a big change.

World Oceans Day

Saturday, June 8th, 2013

As you know, here at Katie’s Cards we are passionate about environmental issues. On the 8th of June (today!) people around the world will be holding events to raise awareness about the need to protect the ocean for future generations. The organisers are encouraging people to make a promise to change one habit that will help to protect the ocean. This could be promising to re-use water bottles, to cut down on meat consumption or to take re-usable bags to the supermarket.

Why not take this opportunity to send our Earth Day ecard to your friends? It raises awareness about the dangers of treating the world around us as an endless resource. Additionally, we’d love to hear from you if you’re going to take a pledge for Oceans Day. You can email us at katie@katiescards.com, tweet us or Facebook us.

Earth Day Island

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Though many of you will have received the Earth Day ecard from us on April 22nd, it certainly isn’t a message which is only appropriate for one day of the year. The story and graphics, put together by our animators, tell the tale of a mariner who has been shipwrecked on a desert island. But his delight soon turns to despair after he manages to use up all of the resources in the micro-environment…

Earth Day still

In addition to being able to find the ecard on our website, you can also find it on our Katie’s Cards YouTube channel. Feel free to share it with your family and friends too if you’d like to spread the message!

Earth Day 2013 Theme Announced!

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

The Earth Day Network has announced that the theme for Earth Day 2013 will be ‘The Face of Climate Change.’ This theme aims to highlight the fact that climate change is already having significant effects around the world. The Earth Day Network is encouraging people to submit pictures of places, people or animals which have either already been affected by climate change, or which are dangerously close to being so.

You can find out more about Earth Day here on the official website and, don’t forget, we have a brand new Earth Day ecards coming soon to the Katie’s Cards website!

Eco-Friendly Buzz

Monday, April 15th, 2013

Here at Katie’s Cards, we’re always thinking of ways in which we can help the environment and can be as eco-friendly as possible. One of the campaigns that has caught our eye recently is the Save the Bees campaign. The great British bumble bee is becoming increasingly endangered which is bad news not only for the little furry fellows but also for humans. Bees play a key role in sustaining the flora and fauna of Great Britain and one-third of our diet depends on them carrying out their busy-bee work.

By discouraging the use of insecticides, by learning more about the importance of bees to our lives and by planting bee-friendly plants in our gardens, we can all do out bit to save the bees. For more information about this campaign, visit this website.

If there are any other environmental issues you think we should be blogging about then please contact us at katie@katiescards.com. We’d love to hear your suggestions!
