A Thank You E Card from Me to You…

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

Hello, Katie here.

I’ve deserted the drawing board this morning in favour of my desktop computer, as I thought it necessary to share a quick message of thanks.

I’d like to say a great big thank you to all of our wonderful members; for your loyalty, support and help with comments about the website and our selection of ecards.

It might sound a little bit cheesy, but we really DO appreciate it when we get messages or blog comments suggesting a new type or style of card to add to our ever-growing collection.

Recently, we received some great suggestions from one of our Trans-Atlantic members about creating ecards for Memorial Day and Veterans Day which we’re keen to act upon. And also some feedback about our 4th July ecards which has definitely proved useful, particularly as we’re just in the process of developing a new animated design for this celebration.

We do get quite a buzz here when we think that what we make from our little company in Teddington is shaped and helped along by people from all over the world, looking for that perfect e card to sum up the occasion.

So thank you again. And as always, please do feel free to let us know if you think there are any important dates in the calendar that we’ve missed or even if you just have a great idea for a Birthday greeting or Christmas ecard.

Get in touch by adding a comment on our blog, send us an email or contact us through our Facebook page.

Right, I think it’s time to get on with some of these new designs. Back to the drawing board I go!

Take care,

Katie x

KC’s Top 5

We know it’s never fair to have favourites and, really, we love them all equally… but seeing as it is awards season, we thought it might be fun to share our top picks from some our most popular categories.

Don’t worry – we’ll try to keep the speeches short.

#1 4th Birthday Monkey (Birthday)

4 birthday BOY

For your little monkeys on their 4th Birthday

This is one of our newest ecards added to the site. It’s just one of our new range of milestone age birthday cards for children which feature dinosaurs, lions, and fish. We really love these cheeky monkeys and something tells us that your cheeky monkeys will love them too.

# 2 Cheesy Valentine (Valentine’s Day)

MR-CHEESE

For Valentine’s puns riper than the bluest stilton check out Mr Cheese

We know we’ve been banging on about this one loads but we’re really proud of the idea and the way that it looks. Valentine’s is over for another year, but we’ve got a feeling this one will ‘Brie’ around for a long time to ‘crumb’. Eugh. We’re sorry.

# 3 Cake Game (Birthday)

The Cakemunchers Birthday game - nearly as addictive as frosted icing.

The Cakemunchers Birthday game – nearly as addictive as frosted icing.

The Cake Game isn’t just a really cool looking card but a really addictive game too. We’re ashamed to say that even out of office hours we’ve found ourselves loading up this one for ‘just a couple more gos’. And for little ones (yes, that’s who the game is really designed for) there’s a choice of pink or blue.

#4 Turkey Breakout 2 (Christmas)

Find out what happens our turkeys on the run in this entertaining ecard

Find out what happens our turkeys on the run in this entertaining ecard

Is it too early to send your Christmas cards? Probably a smigden. But we wouldn’t blame you wanting to send this entertaining ecard with a slightly dark, but ultimately funny, ending.

#5 Supermum (Mother’s Day)

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's Supermum, silly!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s Supermum, silly!

Christmas may be ages away, but don’t forget about Mum on Sunday 30th March (or Sunday 11th May if you’re in the U.S.) This ecard gives an exclusive glimpse at a day in the life of Superman – ahem – or should we say Mum (wink, wink.)

So there you have it. To the winners we say congratulations and to the runners up we say better luck next ye–

— Wait, please… don’t play the music yet!

Summer tipples to keep you cool

Thursday, August 8th, 2013

Here in the Katie’s Cards office, we’ve been trying desperately to keep cool. England has been experiencing a heat wave this summer and, safe to say, no one really knows what to do with themselves! To cope with the soaring temperatures, we’ve hit the (non-alcoholic) bottle. Try making these refreshing tipples to cool you down…

Ladies and Gentlemen, the RHS brings you… ugly flowers

Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

Here at Katie’s Cards, we generally love all things floral. From big blooming bouquets to the subtle scent of an English rose, we are constantly pinning floral images on Pinterest,  using flowers as inspiration for our ecards and filling the office with daffodils and other hand-picked treats. Recently, however, the lovely people at the RHS conducted a poll of the ugliest plant species they could find and the results are, well, peculiar.

From the rafflesia arnoldii – famous for emitting the smell of rotting flesh (!) – to the raoulia eximia from New Zealand which looks like a grazing sheep from a distance, you can view all the weird and the wonderful contenders here on the Interflora blog.

Time for Tennis

Monday, June 24th, 2013

The Wimbledon Tennis Championships start today and, seeing as the Katie’s Cards office is just a short distance away from Wimbledon, we’re certainly feeling the excitement. Here are a couple of fun facts to get you in the mood:

– It’s the biggest single annual sporting catering operation in the whole of Europe and it involves A LOT of strawberries and cream – 28,000kg of strawberries to be precise!

– This year, competitors will be awarded a grand total of £22,560,00 in prize money by the All England Club.

-The longest ever match, which was in 2010, was between Nicolas Mahut and John Isner and it went on for a staggering eleven hours and five minutes! Luckily, they didn’t play it all in one day…

– If the roof was closed, you could fit 290 million tennis balls inside the Centre Court.

We found these facts here on the Wimbledon website where you can find out all you’d ever want to know about this brilliantly British tournament.

Father’s Day Banquet, 1939

Monday, June 10th, 2013

I recently came across this wonderful advert from 1939 when the Savoy Ballroom in Chicago hosted a father and son banquet in honour of Father’s Day.

What does summertime mean to you?

Friday, June 7th, 2013

Now that the sun seems to be shining a little more often, we’ve been discussing what summertime means to us. From childhood memories of strawberry picking and evening football matches in the park, to cream teas by the coast, long bike rides, Wimbledon and picnics on a windy beach … the sights, sounds and smells of summer are now all around us.

What does summer mean to you? We’re based in England but we would love to hear about what summertime means to you wherever you may be in the world. You can contact us by email at katie@katiescards.com, on Twitter or on Facebook. We’ve also put together a Pinterest board of everything that reminds us of summer which you can view here.

Planning a picnic? Then keep these tips in mind…

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

This beautiful sunny weather we’ve been blessed with for the past few days can only mean one thing, it’s time for a picnic! There’s nothing quite like the feeling of settling down on rug and munching on a delicious assortment of treats whilst the sun warms your face. But bear in mind these tips if you’re planning on dining al fresco in the park anytime soon:

1. Living in England, you get used to the heavens opening as soon as you’ve settled down in your picnic spot so make sure you have somewhere you can run to if it starts raining!

2. Keep it simple – sticky foods, ice cream and big heavy dishes probably aren’t the most practical things to take along…

3. Beware of our black and yellow friends! If you take cans of fizzy drinks along, make sure you pour the contents into a plastic cup before drinking in case a wasp has decided to climb in.

4. If you freeze a couple of bottles of water beforehand then they can double up as cool blocks in your picnic hamper!

So there you have it – the tips for a perfect picnic. If you think we’ve missed something essential off the list then don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Introducing … Little Cherry

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

Little Cherry Logo

This week we would like to introduce you to a lovely company called Little Cherry which is based in Surrey, not too far from Katie’s Cards.

Little Cherry sells a range of beautiful products for parties, weddings and birthdays. Their natural tableware is made from sugar cane, unbleached wheat fibres and palm leaf – it’s stylish, sustainable and ethically sourced. So stylish, in fact, that their natural palm leaf plates were used for the wrap parties of both Skyfall and Les Miserables last year!

Eco-Friendly Weddings – Featuring Shropshire Petals

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Today’s blog post is about the lovely Shropshire Petals company. Shropshire Petals is a family business which shares our sustainable, eco-friendly ethos and provides a beautiful service for weddings. Eco-friendly weddings are becoming increasingly popular yet sourcing everything you need to make your wedding suitably ‘green’ can be tricky, and that’s where Shropshire Petals comes in.

Shropshire Petals Confetti Fun!

Shropshire Petals Confetti Fun!

The company provides a modern, eco-friendly twist to traditional confetti by providing 100% biodegradable natural petal confetti and believe us when we say it is BEAUTIFUL.

A lot of venues no longer allow synthetic confetti and so, since throwing confetti over the bride and groom is such a lovely tradition (which dates back over two centuries!), Shropshire Petals decided to come up with an eco-friendly alternative. The result was their beautifully romantic petal confetti.

The flowers are all grown on a farm in Shropshire and each petal is hand-picked. You can choose petals from a wide range of flowers including cornflowers, hydrangea, roses, lavender and delphiniums to create your own unique confetti combination.

Flower Month

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

This month is flower month and what better excuse to get out in the garden and get your hands dirty. Though you need to watch out for late frosts, this is the time of the year when the air becomes filled with the smell of freshly cut grass and your garden bursts into life. The Royal Horticultural Society have a wealth of tips about what to plant and when which you can view here on their website.

Seasonal Food Ideas

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Here at Katie’s Cards, we’re always thinking about ways in which we can be as ‘green’ as possible. We’re proud of the fact that our ecards are very environmentally friendly but there are tonnes of other choices that we all make every day which impact the environment. One way we can be a little kinder to the environment is by buying and eating as much seasonal, locally-produced food as possible. I thought it would be helpful, therefore, to suggest a few seasonal recipes perfect for Easter weekend:

– In terms of vegetables, spinach, shallots, leeks and, of course, spring onions are all in season. Why not whip up this vegetarian ricotta and spinach lasagna?

– Meat wise, it’s all about rabbit and lamb at this time of year. For a twist on the classic Easter meat, try these lamb and apricot meatballs.

– Rhubarb is also in season at this time of year, and this Easter rhubarb and apple pie would be the perfect chocolate-free dessert for an otherwise cocoa-rich Easter.

We’re very excited about Easter here in the Katie’s Cards office and you can spread the Easter cheer by sending your friends and family members one of our colourful, animated Easter ecards.

EGG-cellent Easter Craft ideas

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

There are so many creative Easter craft ideas on Pinterest and I thought it’d be helpful to select a few of the best to help anyone who needs some inspiration:

These painted Easter eggs filled with gold glitter would add a touch of sparkle to any Easter table.

This is an adorable idea for decorating a kids’ table – Simply cut out a flower shape from colourful paper, fill a cupcake case with sweets and voila, you will have little edible daffodils strewn across the table.

Red Nose Day

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Today is Red Nose Day, a day organised by Comic Relief every two years to raise money for projects in the U.K and Africa to support people who are living in dire poverty or who are facing injustice. Many schools and offices across the country will be holding fundraising events and a lot of people will be doing individual events (always silly, often outrageous) to raise money. The day culminates in a night of comedy from some of the best-loved comedians and celebrities. The money raised will go towards various projects in the UK – including ones to help young carers and older people – and in Africa, which focus on women and girls, HIV and AIDs and climate change, amongst other issues.

16 days until the London 2012 opening ceremony 2012.07.11.

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

There are only 16 days left until the London 2012 Olympic’s opening ceremony begins!

This an incredibly exciting time for many people across the globe especially those who live in England, who have been anticipating this fantastic event since 2007. The construction of the Olympic park and re-generation of the surrounding area has been the focus of much attention since work began in May 2008. The site contains the huge Olympic stadium, Aquatics Centre, the Olympic village which is used for accommodation for athletes, a Velodrome and a white water centre.

It’s quite unbelievable to think that such a huge amount of work has been completed in such a short space of time. Take a look at this fantastic time-lapse video which shows you the Olympic stadium and surroundings under construction to completion;

The opening ceremony, named the ‘Isles of Wonder’ commences at 9pm on Friday the 27th of July and will sure to be entertaining. Danny Boyle, Artistic Director of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony said:

‘Our Isles of Wonder salutes and celebrates the exuberant creativity of the British genius in an Opening Ceremony that we hope will be as unpredictable and inventive as the British people’

I’m sure you’ll agree that this is definitely something to celebrate and enjoy with loved ones. Its not too late to organise your own opening ceremony party or get together so why not take advantage of our specially designed, London 2012 e card and send your loved ones an invite to your themed party?

Top class customer service rule number 1; always reply to your customers! 2012.01.26.

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Hi all,

Those of you who are a fan of our Facebook page will have seen yesterday that I shared a fantastic photograph of a letter written on behalf on Lily Robinson aged 3 and a half to Sainbury’s about their Tiger bread and a wonderful response from Sainsbury’s (see below):

Correspondence from Lily to Sainsbury's

Correspondence from Lily to Sainsbury's

This gave me great joy to see and I just had to share it with all the Katie’s Cards Facebook fans immediately (one of the benefits of being a Facebook fan is I share little snippets of fun like this as well as news and updates about Katie’s Cards. If you would like to become a fan then please click on this link – Katie’s Cards Fan Page and press the ‘like’ button at the top of the page) because I thought it was an excellent example of really great customer service. The type that puts a smile on someone’s face and the type that I hope to emulate here at Katie’s Cards.

We’ve all been in a position at one point or another whereby our expectations have not been met when purchasing a service or product. It is not a positive experience and can leave you feeling unsatisfied. When buying something online I believe its even more important to feel like there is a human at the end of your transaction. It instills confidence and comfort to know that you can ask a person to explain something to you if the need ever occur.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with anyone who didn’t see my post yesterday. It brought a smile to my face and I’m sure it will to yours!
