The Real Cost Of Sending Paper Invitations

Monday, January 19th, 2015

Did you hear the news story about the little boy who was billed after he failed to attend a classmate’s birthday party?

Five-year old Alex Nash from Cornwall accepted the invitation to the dry ski slope in Devon but after his parents realised that the date clashed with other arrangements, he was not able to attend.

The official-looking invoice was found by the parents in the child’s school bag – which included banking information for payment to Julie Lawrence, the mother who had sent the bill for £15.95.

Alex’s father, Derek, has said that he has been told that the claim would be taken to small claims court following his refusal to pay the invoice. He commented:

“I can understand she’s upset about losing money. The money isn’t the issue, it’s the way she went about trying to get the money from me”.

Whilst the idea of invoicing a child for failing to attend a party seems ludicrous, no-shows at a birthday parties are a common gripe amongst parents – especially when the activity booked is a costly one.

In the article, Ms Lawrence argued that the necessary contact details were on the invite whilst the boy’s parents claim that, at the time, they did not have the necessary information needed to get in touch with her to cancel.

For us, this dispute highlighted the main problem with paper invites – you don’t always have them on you when you need them and they can be so easily lost, misplaced or left behind.

Invitation ecards on the other hand are much more accessible. An email card in an inbox can be found in a matter of moments, allowing attendees to view the details of the event, RSVP and (perhaps most importantly in this case) cancel by simply pressing the ‘Reply’ button.

Ecards aren’t just useful for hosts; replying in kind is a great way for those invited to pass on their response to a party invitation. And if you should you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having to cancel at a moment’s notice, a fun and entertaining birthday e-card addressed to the party thrower could very well soften the blow of a no-show…

…and avoid the need for those awkward and costly legal proceedings!

Stamp Out Postal Costs with Ecards

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014

Recently, the Guardian reported that Royal Mail share prices had dropped rapidly following the privatisation of the postal service last year.

The article also reports a drop in the sending of letters and cards in favour of online methods of communication.

And with the recent rise in stamp prices, meaning that a book of 12 first class stamps now costs £7.44, it’s not hard to see why.

When you tally the number of Birthdays, annual occasions like Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day along with one-off celebrations such as Weddings and Births that occur in the calendar, annual membership with Katie’s Cards at £7.50 (just 6 pence more than a book of stamps) seems very reasonable – especially considering that this allows the sending of unlimited ecards to friends and relatives all year round.

But we’re not just advocates of ecards because they save money or because they’re kind to the planet – even though that IS another reason why we love them so much – but they also save time and worrying too:

You can send ecards to individuals or to many. You can send them near and far in an instant. Or, schedule for a later date if that suits.

The point is you don’t have to wonder whether your Auntie’s Get Well Soon card got lost in the post or whether your brother’s Birthday card will arrive by air mail to Australia in time.

So if you find the time, head over to our ecard categories and consider stamping out postal costs for good.

We’ve got a great selection of animated ecards, including some lesser-spotted greetings for occasions such as Canada Day, Ramadan and Grandparents Day

Age is Just a Number

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

When birthdays are just around the corner, kids love telling anyone who’ll listen how old they are.

And although this changes ever so slightly as we get older, we want to share in the excitement of your little one’s milestone birthday with the introduction of our age-specific range of ecards for children.

If you’ve been following our blog, you might recall when announced the introduction of this new selection and the sneak previews and sketches we uploaded during the design process.

Well, we’re very pleased to announce that this range is now up and running in the birthday ecard category and available for members to preview and send.

Take look at the third in our range of age specific ecards which uses simple shapes and block colours for the greeting, as well as a catchy soundtrack:

The ‘3rd Birthday Fish’ ecard features a school of brightly coloured fish as they swim into frame, letting out air bubbles as they go. One of the bubbles contains the number three, which grows in size to create part of the ‘Happy Birthday’ message.

Since added, the age-specific range for children is already proving popular and we’re now looking to extend this range to cover ‘special age’ ecards for both teenagers and adults in the very near future…

…Meaning, soon there will be no escape from those annual reminders of just how old we’re all getting!

Until then, we hope you enjoy taking a look at the new designs.

Happy New New Year

Friday, January 24th, 2014

If you’re a regular visitor to Katie’s Cards you might have noticed by looking at our homepage that we’ve added a couple more designs to the Chinese New Year category, ready for the celebrations which take place from January 31st.

Why the Long Face?

You might have also seen that the horse features quite heavily in a few of our designs… No we’ve not all turned into hippomaniacs (people obsessed with horses, apparently) but we did think it would be quite fitting as 2014 marks The Year of the Horse in the Chinese Zodiac.

And while we’re here bragging about all our new designs, we might as well tell you that we’re currently in the process of designing a rather special Valentine’s Day card too – so look out for further blog posts on the design process as well as a couple of sneak previews.

Upcoming April Events

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

April is a little quieter than March was, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not plenty to celebrate:

The Queen’s Birthday (21st April) – This is the Queen’s actual birthday and not her official birthday (which falls in June). The Queen usually holds small private celebrations, though there will be gun salutes in central London. This year is her 87th birthday!

Earth Day (22nd April) – In the Katie’s Cards office, we’re all really looking forward to Earth Day and we released a sneak peek of our first ever Earth Day ecard in our most recent blog post. We’ve also made a donation to the Plant a Billion campaign, which you can learn more about here.

ANZAC Day (25th April, Australia) – This is the day that Australians commemorate those who have served and died in peacekeeping operations, conflicts and wars. Commemorative ceremonies and services will be held at dawn across Australia. ANZAC  stands for ‘Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.’

If you can think of any other important April dates then please get in touch! You can contact us via our Facebook page, Twitter, or by emailing us at

Earth Day Ecard Sneak Peek

Friday, April 12th, 2013

We are delighted to announce that we will soon be unveiling our first ever Earth Day ecard! Earth Day is on April 22nd and is an important date in the eco-calendar. All of our ecards are environmentally friendly and we’re always thinking of ways in which we can be as green as possible, so Earth Day seemed to be the perfect opportunity to a create a new ecard to add to the collection.

We hope that each time our Earth Day ecard is sent, a little more awareness will be raised about the importance of protecting our environment.

It’s National Poetry Month!

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

April is National Poetry Month in both the U.K and the U.S.A and so libraries, schools and publishers will be holding festivals, workshops and poetry readings to celebrate it. The month-long festival aims to encourage people to indulge in the joys of poetry and highlights the importance of poetry in the national curriculum.

So, if you’re a poetry buff, someone who would like to get more into poetry or if you teach poetry and literature to children, then National Poetry Month is the perfect way to get inspiration. Why not get creative with the way you celebrate this ancient art? Write a poem on the pavement in chalk, organise a poetry reading or sign up for a poetry class. If you’re looking for a good place to start with poetry then visit the Poetry Archive website where you can listen to over a hundred poets reading their work.

The Katie’s Cards ‘Attack of the Cake Munchers’ game has been played over 620,000 times! 2012.06.06.

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

Hi all,

I hope all of you who celebrated, enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations! I have something else for you to celebrate now; our ‘Attack of the Cake Munchers’ game has been played over 620,000 times!

I am absolutely thrilled that people like it so much. We did put a lot of work into developing it. It was a birthday e card originally and  so we had to spend quite a bit of time making it more involved and playable, adding new levels etc. Its great to see that the hard work is paying off with lots of people enjoying the game across the world.

If you haven’t had a go yet, then click here to try it (its completely free!). The aim of the game is to try and stop the cake eating monsters from getting their hands on your cake. There are an assortment of booby traps to help you, but each level gets harder and it gets pretty tough by the end!

Have a go and see what you think – and remember to share it with anyone you think would enjoy it!
