Football, Sports and Katie’s E Cards

Friday, June 20th, 2014

“Yes! Good footballing.”

“Congratulations on that dribble”

“That ball nearly went right between those poles!”

These are just some of the things you might hear some of our very own team shouting as they watch their 4-yearly scheduled intake of football.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are those in our office who thoroughly enjoy a game of two halves. Every other day it’s “football is lovely”, “I do enjoy a nice kick-about myself of a weekend”, “that referee was wonderful, extremely balanced and impartial” and so on.

Needless to say that they, in particular, were a little bit glum this morning after last night’s World Cup performance. And to be honest we all are. Even for non-football fans, there’s something quite exciting about everyone coming together to root for the same team – so it is a little bit sad that it looks like we’re coming to the end of that brief period of soccer solidarity.

Of course we’re all secretly hoping that there’s some light at the end of the players tunnel and that we’ll still manage to scrape our way through to the next round.  If only to have to have a few more chances to bond over our mutual disappointment. After all, another four years is a long time to wait.

For fans of the beautiful game, send the footie-themed Soccer Birthday Ecard. Browse our extensive e card categories for more sport-related greetings, including golf, rugby and fishing cards in our Birthday and Father’s Day collections.

Cheesy Valentine

Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

A couple of weeks ago we mentioned that we were in the process of developing a new Valentine’s Day card. Today, we’re very excited to share with you information about the design process along with sneak previews and artist’s sketches of our new ecard.

Coming up with the idea

The very first thing we do before we start to design an ecard is put our heads together and try to determine what we want to achieve in terms of story and in relation to the specific celebration. With this ecard we were all fairly certain that we wanted to create something that was a bit light-hearted and that our members could share with anyone, including friends – and those who they’d like to be a bit more – without being too embarrassed. So right off the bat, we knew that we were going to have to adopt a humorous approach and came up with the idea of using the cheesiest puns possible to make recipients chuckle/groan. The “cheesy” element eventually manifested into a cute little character whose actions would match the pun. In the preview below, the toe-curling pun ‘I wheelie like you’ has our ‘Mr Cheese’ character riding across the screen on a bike.

Choosing the perfect puns

We’re suckers for a good pun (just check out our ‘A whole lotta pun’ Pinterest board if you don’t believe us) so we thought long and hard about what which would work best. Ecards need to get their message across quickly and we soon realised that the puns would need to use no more than four words and also involve a variety of interesting props for ‘Mr Cheese’ to interact with.

Developing the look

We were keen on using a simple but stylistic design so after we’d settled on our puns, we did some sketches based on how we wanted the ecard to look. And then we were ready to go. Of course there were changes during the design process; two of the puns we’d chosen ended up using similar props so we eventually changed the action of one of them to avoid repetition. Below shows the artist’s sketch for the pun ‘I dig you’ and a preview from the existing animation which has ‘Mr Cheese’ operating a similar piece of equipment to accompany the pun ‘You move me’ – in this instance we changed the prop and action from the first sketch and kept the idea from second.

Animation

The animation followed on from the design sketches, first with the development of a rough-cut and then a period of meticulously editing the actions of the various moving elements to create a smooth and realistic animation. And whilst all this was going on, the search for the right soundtrack began…

Finding the music

It’s a surprisingly time consuming job to find the right sample of music to accompany an ecard. But after listening to hundreds of possible soundtracks, we found the right fit. Again, the tone was light-hearted and upbeat and worked well with the movement of the animation. A few more tweaks and the card was ready for final sign off and is now has pride of place in the Valentine’s Day category on Katie’s Cards.

And whilst we normally don’t like to toot our own horn, we think this ecard is really Gouda!

Our brand new Facebook Application! 2011.12.15

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Hi all,

We’re delighted to announce the launch of our new Facebook application which allows you to connect to your Facebook account and send ecards to your Facebook friends AND see birthday reminders from Facebook!

The application is available to members and non-members. Non-members can send cards from the ‘Free e cards’ category of the website and members can send cards from any category.

To use the application as a member to send e cards all you have to do is select an ecard from any category to send, and when you get to the ‘send’ page you will see a Facebook button with ‘Click here to post on Facebook’. When you click this button you will be asked to log into your Facebook account, once you have done this you will see a list of your Facebook friends and you can choose who you want to send the card to. You can post the card on the recipients profile page or send them a message to their Facebook inbox.

To use this application as a non-member you can select any e card from the ‘Free ecards’ section and follow the same instructions as above.

To see your birthday reminders, all you have to do is click on the ‘View your Facebook Reminders’ button on the Katie’s Cards homepage. You will be asked to log into your Facebook account and then you will see a list of your Facebook friends who have birthdays coming up which you can then send a birthday e card to using Facebook or in the traditional way, by sending them an email.

This application has been developed by us to enhance your user experience. We hope that you enjoy using it!

Please comment if you need any help with using the application!

Brand New Thanksgiving and Christmas Ecards in the Katie’s Cards Collection. 2011.11.22.

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

2011.11.22

With the festive season approaching, demand for e cards is ever increasing as more and more people opt to send animated and musical e greetings to their loved ones across the globe because they are cost-effective and green. Unlike most e card companie’s, Katie’s Cards has always produced a large variety of ecards to suit all tastes and ages, meaning that customers can use their membership fully throughout the whole year for all of their loved ones, and have just released some brand new seasonal and Christmas e cards to add to the varied collection:

Thanksgiving e cards

The brand new ‘Leaf Waltz’ is perfect to send to adult friends and family. A stylish animation, the animation of dancing autumnal leaves is beautiful and is perfectly accompanied by Sonata a Quattro No.3 in C Major, composed by Gioachino Rossini.

In complete contrast to the ‘Leaf Walt’ is the other new thanksgiving ecard: ‘Turkey Shoot’ e card game. Set to fun and upbeat country music, the name of the game is to shoot the thanksgiving turkeys’s as they leap from behind various walls, doors and rocks. The perfect greeting and gift for all of your fun-loving friends and relatives to enjoy. Try out this card here.

These ecards will join the others in the thanksgiving collection which contains a great range of ecards such as the humorous ‘Turkey Breakout’ series, the traditional ‘Painted Turkey’ and The First Thanksgiving’ and modern ‘Mayflower’ ecards.

Christmas e cards

‘Runaway Turkey’ is another new Christmas e card game, this one however, involves the player in a chase in which a hungry farmer runs after a runaway turkey. The player has to help the turkey escape by helping it avoid obstacles in its path. A great way to send festive greetings to loved ones, this fantastic e card game retains the traditional features of ecards but entertains the recipient as well as sending the message. Try out this e card game here.

Meet the Katies Cards team

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Hi all,

As promised, here are a few snaps to help you get to know me and the rest of the team better.

Our office

First of all, here are two photographs of the Katies Cards office. The building with the bluey-grey ‘Engravers House’ sign above the window is the our office where all of our ecards are created. The building is a converted butchers shop and is bright and airy. There are 3 companies in the building altogether as well as my ceramics studio which was built at the back of the office.

The Katies Cards office

The office is in Teddington, a small and pretty town in Middlesex in the south of England. Its right next to a gorgeous park called Bushy park, where we go at lunch time and where I walk Plum.

The team

We are a small, close-knit team who enjoy working together to create our e cards in our lovely office in Teddington. We often listen to music in the office and because of Nick’s wide taste, usually leave the selection up to him. There are a few pubs nearby where every now and then we go to have a lovely pub lunch.

Nick

P1010663

My husband Nick works with me to come up with ideas for new e cards and helps bring my drawings and paintings to life on the computer screen. He helped me to create my first e card for my Mum and has been instrumental in getting Katies Cards where it is now.

Prior to Katies Cards, Nick studied animation at University. Once qualified, he embarked on a successful 8 years as an animator before deciding to go it alone and use his skills to work as a freelance animator for TV and film, which was how we met Barry.

Nick has an eclectic taste in music and enjoys food, cycling, films and spending time with friends and family.

I am very lucky to be able to work alongside my husband who is extremely talented and committed to producing such high quality cards for you!

Barry

P1010674

Barry is a talented illustrator who has worked with us to create our e-cards from a very early stage. He has made many of the backgrounds and characters you see in our collection and has also been instrumental in helping to shape the seeds of my ideas and come up with new ones!

He studied illustration at University and has since had a very successful 7 year career as an illustrator. When I asked him for some facts to write in the blog, he proudly told me that as a student, he designed the characters in a number 1 Playstation game called ‘Prisoner of war’ which is very impressive!

He is a keen follower of football and art and enjoys playing golf.

Racheal

DSC_1116

Racheal is new to the team, having only joined us 1 month ago. She was brought on board to help us grow Katies Cards due to her 7 years experience in marketing for both large and small companies. Unusually for a marketer, Racheal actually studied Sculpture at University, but after completing the degree realised that she didn’t want to follow the creative path and went on a search to find the right career. After joining a small publishing company as a customer service advisor, she was quickly moved over to the marketing department and rose up the ranks. Since then she has worked for another large publishing company and a disability organisation, planning and implementing marketing campaigns and developing marketing strategies.

Racheal is a keen cook and a lover of all things food, fashion and interiors.

Me

DSC_1177

You may already feel like you know a lot about me so i’ll try to keep it brief. I am Katie and I am the person who started this process 5 years ago. I am passionate about saving the environment and I am always on the look out for eco-friendly ideas, which is how I realised that there weren’t any good quality e cards to send to people five years ago when I was looking for an eco-friendly e card for my Mum’s birthday. I decided then to make my own e card, taking some time to make sure it was really good quality and I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to do more! I came up with some more ideas for Nick and I to get to work on and then planned how we could sell them to people on the internet. 18 months later we launched katiescards.com with just 25 cards and have steadily been adding more to the collection over the years – we now have over 160 in the collection for all sorts of occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s day, Mothers day, Fathers day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Independance day, St Patrick’s day, engagement, wedding day, anniversary, new baby, new home, Canada day and many more!

Click on the link to see the first birthday e card that I created for my Mum (you can send this card also if you like it).

I love what I do and that I am able to combine the things that I love in my job – art, environmental issues and working with Nick. Like Racheal, I also studied Sculpture at University and after leaving went onto become an art director for film and TV. After becoming a mother, I decided I wanted to take a step back from my career so that I could bring up our children Molly and Joe. Now that the children are older and turning into young adults, I have more time and thats another reason Katies Cards came along at just the right time for me.

I enjoy tennis, art, film, traveling and spending time with friends and family. I also enjoy taking long walks with our Jack Russell Plum (who you will hear more about later). I love making e cards and genuinely wish to make you and your loved ones feel special when one of our cards is sent.

Plum (the office dog)

Me and Plum in Bushy park

Plum is our Jack Russell but we bring her to the office every day so that she doesn’t get lonely. We have a garden here that she enjoys running around (and terrorising next doors cats!) and because we are right next to the beautiful Bushy park, I can take her for good lunch time walks which she loves.

P1010626

Plum

Plum is 5 years old, is great fun and a loving dog. She is, just as all Jack Russell’s are, she’s very stubborn and territorial and we often have moments when she goes completely crazy! But she is a great character and we love having her here in the office. She is also a brilliant source of inspiration and our walks together have been where alot of my ideas have formed.

She got her name when, at only a few days old, we took her to meet my mum. My mum has a Plum tree in her garden which some Plums had fallen off, and the new puppy picked one up in her mouth and brought it to me, dropping it at my feet. Out son Joe said ‘Plum’s a good name!’ and we all agreed!

That’s it for now. I will keep updating you on our team news and add some more pictures so that you know what is happening here but I hope you feel you know all of us a bit more now.

Hope you’re all having a nice Wednesday,

Katie x
