How to Avoid the Cliché for Valentine’s Day

Tuesday, January 27th, 2015

Love it or loathe it, February 14th is on the horizon and is bound to bring an influx in sales for anyone working in the heart-shaped balloon, rose or chocolate industry.

Not that we’re saying that there’s anything wrong with that. After all, everybody likes to feel loved — and by the beginning of February, the chocolate reserves from Christmas are starting to look a bit sparse!

But if you’re thinking of getting that special someone a gift, consider doing something a bit different from the ordinary this year.  And if you’re not sure what that ‘something different’ might be, we’ve listed a run-down of the most clichéd gifts for Valentine’s Day to help you know what NOT to buy – along with some suggestions for personalised variations that could make all the difference…

Get their attention – Valentine’s E-Greeting “Robot Love”

Coupon books

Whilst you might get a few brownie points for making rather than buying your gift, a coupon book that offers vouchers for a ‘free foot massage’ or a ‘night off cooking the dinner’ isn’t exactly original. Instead, try making some “Open when…” letters. These are individual hand-written letters created by you and designed to be opened by your other half on different occasions throughout the year — like when they’re celebrating their birthday or feeling under the weather.

A Dozen Red Roses

Everybody loves roses, right? Well yes, some people do and some people don’t. Part of getting your Valentine’s gift right is knowing which camp your partner is in.  If they’re strictly against, choose instead a beautiful bouquet incorporating their favourite posies. And if they don’t like flowers at all, well, you could always try making these?

A Heart Shaped Box of Chocolates

For this Valentine’s Day cliché, it’s not so much the content of the gift that seems a little tired but the method of transport. Chocolates are always a winner but rather than opting for a heart-shaped box that looks like a prop from a Richard Curtis film, be creative and make your own Valentine’s selection box of all their favourite chocolate bars. Or you could be really clever and create a chocolate bar themed story like this one.

A Mixed CD

Now we don’t want to slag off the classic romantic gift that is the mixed CD (or cassette tape if you’re as old as we are) because in the right circumstances it can be the loveliest and most personal gift you can give. But it’s really only something you can get away with giving once, otherwise the gesture loses meaning and can seem just as thoughtless as a withered bouquet bought on the forecourt of a petrol station. For a twist on the traditional mixed tape gift, why not create a slideshow of your favourite pictures accompanied by the song that encapsulates everything you love about your Valentine.

Teddy Bear

You know the kind: small, fluffy and holding an over-sized red heart that reads ‘Be My Valentine’ in italics. There’s not that much that we can say about these except, unless you’re dating an Arctophile (a.k.a. teddy bear collector), save your money and instead choose something that has a bit more significance to your relationship.

Love Hearts

When you’re standing in your local shop on February 13th frantically trying to pick out a present for your significant other, a packet of Love Hearts might seem like the obvious (and easy) choice. But, again, unless Love Hearts have had a profound role in your relationship, it’s probably not a good idea to invest in them on this particular occasion. And if you do decide to go for these opinionated candied treats, at least have a go at being a bit creative with them…

Nothing

If you think Valentine’s Day itself is just one big cliché, you might opt to ignore the whole thing altogether thus presenting your long suffering partner with one of the most common and lacklustre gifts of any Valentine’s – the invisible one. Your argument might be ‘it’s a made up holiday!’ And our retaliation to that would be ‘so what!’ When all’s said and done, it’s a day that encourages people to stop for a second and share their love… And who can argue with that? Which brings us neatly to our final point…

What makes these Valentine’s gifts so cliché?

It’s not because they’re not appreciated, but probably more to do with the fact they generally don’t require much thought. They speak to everyone and not the individual.

That age old adage: ‘it’s the thought that counts’ is never more relevant than here – because gifts aren’t important but taking the time to show you care is.

KC’s Top 5

We know it’s never fair to have favourites and, really, we love them all equally… but seeing as it is awards season, we thought it might be fun to share our top picks from some our most popular categories.

Don’t worry – we’ll try to keep the speeches short.

#1 4th Birthday Monkey (Birthday)

4 birthday BOY

For your little monkeys on their 4th Birthday

This is one of our newest ecards added to the site. It’s just one of our new range of milestone age birthday cards for children which feature dinosaurs, lions, and fish. We really love these cheeky monkeys and something tells us that your cheeky monkeys will love them too.

# 2 Cheesy Valentine (Valentine’s Day)

MR-CHEESE

For Valentine’s puns riper than the bluest stilton check out Mr Cheese

We know we’ve been banging on about this one loads but we’re really proud of the idea and the way that it looks. Valentine’s is over for another year, but we’ve got a feeling this one will ‘Brie’ around for a long time to ‘crumb’. Eugh. We’re sorry.

# 3 Cake Game (Birthday)

The Cakemunchers Birthday game - nearly as addictive as frosted icing.

The Cakemunchers Birthday game – nearly as addictive as frosted icing.

The Cake Game isn’t just a really cool looking card but a really addictive game too. We’re ashamed to say that even out of office hours we’ve found ourselves loading up this one for ‘just a couple more gos’. And for little ones (yes, that’s who the game is really designed for) there’s a choice of pink or blue.

#4 Turkey Breakout 2 (Christmas)

Is it too early to send your Christmas cards? Probably a smigden. But we wouldn’t blame you wanting to send this entertaining ecard with a slightly dark, but ultimately funny, ending.

#5 Supermum (Mother’s Day)

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's Supermum, silly!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s Supermum, silly!

Christmas may be ages away, but don’t forget about Mum on Sunday 30th March (or Sunday 11th May if you’re in the U.S.) This ecard gives an exclusive glimpse at a day in the life of Superman – ahem – or should we say Mum (wink, wink.)

So there you have it. To the winners we say congratulations and to the runners up we say better luck next ye–

Last Minute Valentine

Wednesday, February 12th, 2014

So we’re going to assume that you’ve sorted your Valentine’s day card thanks to our new ‘Cheesy Valentine’ ecard - but what about a present?

Whether you’ve been trying hard to avoid it or just haven’t had the time to organise anything fancy, Valentine’s Day is almost here. But never fear, Katie’s Cards is here to share some of last minute gift ideas from around the web that just happen to be pretty economical too.

Personalised Sharpie Mugs

You can find design ideas for these all over Pinterest but we really liked the idea of personalised Mr and Mrs mugs. You could even add a special date to the handle. We’ve also heard on the grape vine that the cheaper the mug, the better the result – so don’t worry about raiding your Granny’s china cupboard, a cheap mug from the supermarket or Ikea should do the job.

Cheesy Valentine

Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

A couple of weeks ago we mentioned that we were in the process of developing a new Valentine’s Day card. Today, we’re very excited to share with you information about the design process along with sneak previews and artist’s sketches of our new ecard.

Coming up with the idea

The very first thing we do before we start to design an ecard is put our heads together and try to determine what we want to achieve in terms of story and in relation to the specific celebration. With this ecard we were all fairly certain that we wanted to create something that was a bit light-hearted and that our members could share with anyone, including friends – and those who they’d like to be a bit more – without being too embarrassed. So right off the bat, we knew that we were going to have to adopt a humorous approach and came up with the idea of using the cheesiest puns possible to make recipients chuckle/groan. The “cheesy” element eventually manifested into a cute little character whose actions would match the pun. In the preview below, the toe-curling pun ‘I wheelie like you’ has our ‘Mr Cheese’ character riding across the screen on a bike.

Choosing the perfect puns

We’re suckers for a good pun (just check out our ‘A whole lotta pun’ Pinterest board if you don’t believe us) so we thought long and hard about what which would work best. Ecards need to get their message across quickly and we soon realised that the puns would need to use no more than four words and also involve a variety of interesting props for ‘Mr Cheese’ to interact with.

Developing the look

We were keen on using a simple but stylistic design so after we’d settled on our puns, we did some sketches based on how we wanted the ecard to look. And then we were ready to go. Of course there were changes during the design process; two of the puns we’d chosen ended up using similar props so we eventually changed the action of one of them to avoid repetition. Below shows the artist’s sketch for the pun ‘I dig you’ and a preview from the existing animation which has ‘Mr Cheese’ operating a similar piece of equipment to accompany the pun ‘You move me’ – in this instance we changed the prop and action from the first sketch and kept the idea from second.

Animation

The animation followed on from the design sketches, first with the development of a rough-cut and then a period of meticulously editing the actions of the various moving elements to create a smooth and realistic animation. And whilst all this was going on, the search for the right soundtrack began…

Finding the music

It’s a surprisingly time consuming job to find the right sample of music to accompany an ecard. But after listening to hundreds of possible soundtracks, we found the right fit. Again, the tone was light-hearted and upbeat and worked well with the movement of the animation. A few more tweaks and the card was ready for final sign off and is now has pride of place in the Valentine’s Day category on Katie’s Cards.

And whilst we normally don’t like to toot our own horn, we think this ecard is really Gouda!

Who will be your Valentine?

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Valentine’s Day doesn’t just have to be about showing your partner how you feel, it’s also a good opportunity to show the many special people in your life that you appreciate them. When I was a child, I remember waking on February 14th to a little handmade gift on my bedside table and, even though I knew it was from my Mum, it made my day.

 Cupid ecard

Some of the Valentine’s Day ecards on the Katie’s Cards website are perfect for parents to send to their children, especially the Cupid’s Aim card. This ecard features an unlikely couple – a spindly giraffe and a stout little warthog – and the fun animation would bring a smile to any child’s face. You can preview the ecard here. It’s an entertaining way to send your Valentine’s Day wishes to one of the people you love, whatever their age may be.

New Valentine’s Day Ecard!

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

We are delighted to announce that there is a new Valentine’s Day ecard on the Katie’s Cards website. The new ecard, entitled ‘Liquid Love’, is more abstract than many of the ecards in the Katie’s Cards collection. The warm palette of colours and the patchwork-like blending of the different hues of red and pink are used to illustrate an abstract, atmospheric image and signals a new creative direction for Katie’s Cards.

Liquid Love Ecard

Watch the bubbles of colour dance gracefully across the screen as calming music lulls the shapes together to form a pulsating heart. It’s the perfect way to tell somebody that you care this February 14th.

Valentine’s Day – What’s not to love?

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

At the beginning of February, you often begin to hear the annual moans of those who claim to hate Valentine’s Day. With restaurants and some retailers hiking up their prices, and with the expectation of romance weighing heavy, it’s not difficult to see why.

However, what’s so bad about having a day which is about cherishing the people and relationships we love? After all, isn’t it love that makes the world go round? Surely even the Valentine’s day nay-sayers would be secretly happy to receive a little love note on February 14th.

We have a selection of ecards on the Katie’s Cards website which cater for a variety of tastes so go on, pluck up the courage to tell that special someone how you  feel.

Valentines Day – 1 month to go!

Monday, January 14th, 2013
Valentine Flowers Ecard

Valentine Flowers Ecard

Valentine’s Day is now less than 1 month away. For many people Valentine’s Day is about their husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend and buying them a special gift and a card. Sending an ecard for Valentines Day wouldn’t be something that everyone would consider.

Many years ago when visiting the US I was surprised to be given a Valentines Day card from a friend. Their intention was not romance but one of friendship. I don’t know if this was unusual, but I remember thinking that the sentiment was wonderful. Telling someone close to you that you care for them and that you’re thinking of them is something that is often forgotten.

Unfortunately, there is no friends day, Sisters day or Brothers day to appreciate the people in your life. There is no special day to wish all the wonderful people in your life your best wishes and love. I think it’s important to think about and tell these people that you care and that you think of them.

So with less than 1 month to go before Valentine’s Day why not think about sending a Valentine’s Day ecard to those people that are precious in your life. The people that don’t have a special day but would really like to hear that you are there to care and support them.

The Valentines Day ecards at KatiesCards.com are suitable for your friends and family and, of course, your romantic partner too.

Share your love this Valentine’s Day to everyone you care for. Best wishes.

You lift me up. A cute Valentines Day e card. 2012.02.02.

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

When we made this cute Valentines Day ecard I wanted to symbolise the idea that being around someone that you love, who loves you back, can help you to be a more positive person and bring out the best in you. I also wanted a way of animating the age old saying that ‘opposites attract’ which is how I came up with the idea of using a tall lady Giraffe and a chubby little wild boar.

The wild boar finds a way to show the lovely lady Giraffe his gift of a romantic bunch of flowers and with help from Cupid, wins the Giraffes’ heart.

We have a whole range of different Valentines day ecards to choose from so take a browse through our online collection.

I hope you enjoy sending them as much as we have enjoyed making them.

Can you spot all of the film references in this Valentines Day ecard? 2012.01.30

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Hi all,

Valentines Day is on my mind as we only have about 2 weeks to go!

I made the ‘I Love Ewe’ Valentines Day ecard a few years ago. I wanted to make a light-hearted and humurous card that could be sent to the one you love, but also to anyone on this special day to raise a smile. The e card was made up of a series of references to famous romantic films – can you spot them? Take a look, the first person to tell me how many and what film they are from (by posting a comment on this blog) gets a free 1 year subscription!
