Having looked around at various pieces of information on Easter I have found that there are strong symmetries between religion and folklore. It is easy to understand why the egg would symbolise spring being a new beginning, but in Christianity the egg also symbolises the resurrection. The events origins are different for different cultures, religions and countries but the celebrations and symbolism attached to them are all the same or very similar.

I have found a number of explanations regarding the egg hunt, one of them being that the custom was carried from Germany (where their Osterhase (a hare) would lay her eggs in baskets that German children would leave outside of their homes) to America. It is thought that once German immigrants arrived in America the activity transformed slowly into what it is now. I also read that the act of egg hunting came about around the time of the rise of Christianity over paganism. I have read two versions of this rumour, one suggesting Christians were persecuted by Pagans and one that said the opposite. According to the rumour, the victims who were either Christians or Pagans were found and persecuted for practising their religion. They celebrated their custom by burying eggs instead of exchanging them and were found by their tormentors who bribed children to look for eggs buried around homes and on land. When an egg was found, the owner of the land would then be persecuted for following Paganism/Christianity.

Today, this fun filled tradition is celebrated by people all over the world, unaware of what made their ancestors begin doing these things. It brings joy to so many people along with the rest of the vast array of modern day Easter practices which now includes sending of Easter e cards. I wonder what customs we will take with us into the future and what they will evolve into in years to come?

Valentines Day is on my mind as we only have about 2 weeks to go!

I made the ‘I Love Ewe’ Valentines Day ecard a few years ago. I wanted to make a light-hearted and humurous card that could be sent to the one you love, but also to anyone on this special day to raise a smile. We are trying to come up with ideas for a new Valentines day e card at the moment. I have been looking through some of our old ones to get some inspiration and therefore I thought I would refresh your memory!

This gave me great joy to see and I just had to share it with all the Katie’s Cards Facebook fans immediately (one of the benefits of being a Facebook fan is I share little snippets of fun like this as well as news and updates about Katie’s Cards. We’ve all been in a position at one point or another whereby our expectations have not been met when purchasing a service or product. It is not a positive experience and can leave you feeling unsatisfied. When buying something online I believe its even more important to feel like there is a human at the end of your transaction. It instills confidence and comfort to know that you can ask a person to explain something to you if the need ever occur.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with anyone who didn’t see my post yesterday. It brought a smile to my face and I’m sure it will to yours!

I came across this old birthday ecard and thought I would share it with you!

I can remember when we made this, I thought it was a fun idea – imagine a real-life machine like that at home making birthday cakes for you! It reminds me of the elaborate machines that are used by Wallace to get out of bed, make tea and toast etc. in Wallace and Gromit!

I’m sure you all know that Valentines day is a matter of weeks away (3 to be precise).

This day is celebrated across the globe by millions of people who send romantic messages to their lovers or mysterious  messages to those they admire from afar. Many people like to shower the ones they love with gifts of love poems, flowers, chocolates and an assortment of other gifts as well as spend a romantic evening together either in a restaurant, hotel or at home with special food, candles and champagne.

Valentines day does not need to be about lavishing expensive gifts, if you have a little time to plan, you can do something very romantic without spending £100’s of pounds. Here are some ideas of my own that you might like. I hope you find them useful, and please comment if you have any ideas you would like to share!

Katie’s top tips for an inventive, romantic, cost-effective Valentines day:

• Collect together some photographs of the special moments in your relationship and put them together into an album as a keepsake. You can make a beautiful and smart photo-book here at tesco.com. They cost from £5.
• If you are poetic, then write the one you love a poem and incorporate it into your Valentines day ecard, print it onto some pretty paper and give it as a gift or hide it somewhere that your loved-one will find it. If you’re not poetic, take a look here for some ideas for romantic poems.
• Plan a special Valentines meal. Make sure to include your guest’s favourite food, or if you want to try something different take a browse through BBC food’s ideas for Valentines day menu’s here.
• Do one small thing on Valentines day that is unexpected. Send flowers, plan a ad-hoc dinner, meet your loved-one after work and escort them home, buy a bottle of something sparkling to have with dinner (you can get your hands on some great Prosecco’s which are much cheaper than champagne and taste fantastic – I actually prefer it to champagne)
• Dress up your dinner table to look romantic, buy a couple of roses to scatter the petals on the table cloth, rose scented pot-pouri and candles will look fantastic and fairly low cost
• Get your kids involved! Here are some great tips on how to get your kids involved with this celebration – they can make cards and gift boxes as well as table decorations!

Well the Chinese New Year celebrations are almost here. For those of you who don’t know, Chinese New Year is taking place on Monday the 23rd of January this year and this year is the year of the dragon – a powerful and lucky symbol, which hopefully means that its going to be a good year for all!
