Recycling Facts That Could Save the World

Thursday, July 17th, 2014

Debates surrounding our environment and how we can care for it are rifer than ever before. While there are many supporters of the environmentally friendly, green living movement, there is also an understandable consensus that the acts of a single individual will not be enough to make an impact in the grand scheme of things. It really isn’t easy being green, or is it? If we each reduce our footprint on the planet by recycling and reusing resources, the effects could be much more effective than we think. So, we’ve scoured the web for some of the most mind blowing facts that prove how big of an effect a small ‘individual’ change can have.

  1. Recycling 1 can of aluminium provides enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours.
  2. Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrel of oil, and 4000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
  3. Food waste disposed of in landfills creates large quantities of methane gas, which contribute towards greenhouse gasses and global warming. By capturing the bio gas from just 1 tonne of food waste, 1 tonne of carbon dioxide emissions are prevented from entering the atmosphere. To put this in perspective; 1.3 billion tonnes of food waste is produced every year.
  4. An estimated 2.6 billion holiday cards are sold each year in the United States. Enough to fill a football field 10 stories high. If we each sent one less card, we’d save 50,000 cubic yards of paper.

paper

Ultimately, recycling is necessary. It not only has huge impacts on the environment, it creates awareness and forces us to acknowledge limitations of what we use and how much we waste. If you’re thinking of ways you can help have an impact, well, we have just the answer…

ENTER, THE ECARD.

See the thing is, sending an ecard enables you to show a loved one you care, while also translating an important ecological message, which in turn equates to the promotion of the health of our planet. So for the next holiday or celebration, send a Birthday ecard, Christmas ecards, Halloween ecards and others at Katie’s Cards and make a big change.

Why Do We Celebrate Birthdays?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2014

Sounds like a silly question doesn’t it?

After all, why wouldn’t we want to mark the very important day that we were born?

Not to mention that it’s basically a free 24 hour pass to do what you like; have a party, catch up with friends and family, open some presents and eat cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

But this isn’t quite about why, but how we came to celebrate birthdays in the way we do.

So hold onto your party hats, because we’re going to have to go quite a way back to work this one out…

Lighting the candles on a Happy Birthday cake

Let’s Get This Birthday Party Started

Ancient Egyptians can be traced as one of the earliest civilizations to at least take notice of a birthday as recorded in the Bible. It was, however, a Pharaoh’s birthday and Egyptologists have suggested that this mention referred to a coronation anniversary rather than an actual birth-date. Once crowned, Egyptian royals were considered to have transcended mortality and entered the realm of the Gods.

Birthday Cake? Sounds a Bit Greek

As a tribute to the Lunar Goddess, Artemis, the Greeks made cakes in the shape of the moon. They used candles on the cakes to recreate the glowing effect of the moon – a symbol of the Goddess’ luminescent beauty.

What Have the Romans Ever Done For Us?

Well, they certainly seem to have been the first civilization to celebrate birthday on behalf of the common man. And when we say ‘man’, we mean it. Women at that time were not considered worthy of such a fuss. It took until around the 12th century for females to be able to celebrate on their birthday.

Romans lucky enough to reach their 50th would be rewarded with a cake made of wheat flour, olive oil, honey and cheese. And although they weren’t quite sending e cards yet, Romans did enjoy a good old fashioned shindig.

Christmas Birthdays – So Annoying

Original sin along with the associations to the worship of pagan deities prevented the Christian religion from adopting the idea of birthdays for quite some time. It wasn’t until the 4th Century and the introduction of Christmas as a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ that they were no longer considered unholy and hedonistic.

Yet Christmas celebrations as we know them now didn’t really take off until the Victorian era. The first Christmas card was only introduced in 1843. Christmas e-cards on the other hand, are unsurprisingly a much more recent invention with the first ‘electronic postcard’ being sent in 1994.

Ein Kinderfeste Ist Gut, Ja?

It was in 18th Century Europe where the Germans seem to be the likeliest of instigators of the contemporary children’s birthday party. Kinderfeste involved a birthday cake with candles for each year – along with an extra one for the hope of another full year lived. Pretty morbid, we grant you. But infant mortality rates were high back then. It’s also thought that the tradition of making a wish when you blow out your candles was born out of the same superstition.

Happy Birthday was a Cover

Here’s a bit of a birthday bombshell for you. You know that song that everybody sings on your birthday, that you can’t show on TV without paying loads of royalties? It’s not even an original. Back in 1893, Patty and Mildred J. Hill wrote and composed a simple song called ‘Good Morning To All’ intended to be used in schools. It became prevalent all across America, sparking off variations left, right and centre, until Robert Coleman added some of his own lyrics then published it in his songbook in 1924. The rest, as they say, is history.

You could say it’s been a bit of a slow burn getting there, but just look at us now… We’ve got cake, we’ve got candles, a personalised song, party, presents and of course the humble birthday card.

As birthday traditions continue you to develop we also have the internet, that most marvelous of modern inventions, to thank for the introduction of Birthday ecards.

And that’s why it’s fascinating to think where birthday celebrations came from and where they might go in the future.

Birthday Ecard Happy Birthday Billboard Animation

The Animated Billboard Birthday Ecard from Katie’s Cards

A New Happy Birthday Ecard… from a face that’s familiar

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

Here at the Katie’s Cards blog, we like to keep our loyal followers up to date with any new designs added to our substantial catalogue of ecards.

So here we are, to tug at your shirt sleeve like an impatient child and point you in the direction of the rather fabulous Billboard Birthday Ecard.

We had a lot of fun creating this character, especially because he bears a slight resemblance to a certain leader of a marching band who features at the beginning of our Belated Birthday ecard. In the world of Katie’s Cards, perhaps they’re even related.

We hope your recipients enjoy this animated ecard as much as we enjoyed making it.

Don’t forget to customise your ecard with a few words from yourself to the Birthday boy or girl. You can also schedule this Birthday e card in advance.

And if you should forget to do that too, well, that’s exactly what the Belated Birthday Band e card was created for in the first place!

Age is just a number; part three

Friday, April 4th, 2014

It is officially Spring. The clocks have gone forward and the days are getting warmer. May your winter blues make way for those debilitating Spring allergies. Aaah pollen. So as you grab for the tissues and try to remain safely within the confines your pollen free walls, take a look at the latest addition to our Katie’s Cards children’s birthday e card with a sneak preview of its first sketch out to the final design.

Astronaut-rough

For every age specific ecard we create, we get together and come up with an idea that will perfectly appeal to the demographic. So, the idea of astronauts for a 6th birthday ecard was precisely that- an e card that would appeal to the soon to be six year old masses. After all, being an astronaut seemed a pretty solid future career goal- you know, in the future when we didn’t have more important things going on like eating cake and napping.

6th Birthday Astronaut Ecard

So, for children celebrating their super sixth birthday, we are proud to announce our animated Astronaut ecard offering  a unique birthday ecard that’s out of this world. Don’t forget Easters just around the corner, preschedule your Easter ecards to go out now.

Happy Birthday Month

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014

We don’t know if there’s something pumped into the water system each summer but there certainly seems to be quite a few birthdays around this time of year.

And how do we know? Why, Facebook of course!

Yes, there’s been plenty of ‘Happy Birthday(s)’ ‘Hope you’ve had a great day(s)’ and ‘Many Happy Returns’ in our News Feed just lately.

And it seems strange that not so long ago, it was really only your closest friends and family who knew when your special day was.

Now though, everyone can see when your birthday is and even (shock horror!) how old you are. And there’s something quite nice about that. People that you might have lost touch with send a ‘Happy Birthday’ message and you know that your friendship has lasted the years, the many miles and the various address changes between you.

Having said that, sometimes it’s nicer to send something that isn’t so run of the mill. The stock ‘Happy Birthday’ might be ok for acquaintances and work mates that you hardly ever talk to – but for close friends or relatives, you might want to send something a bit more meaningful.

And that’s why as part of your membership with Katie’s Cards you can link up your account with Facebook and post an ecard on their wall to help you stand out amongst a sea of well-wishers. Or, if you’re not one for big public displays of affection, you can send friends and family their Birthday ecard in a private message.

Handy, eh?

And on top of all that, you can sync your account with your Facebook calendar so you can access those all important dates that make the difference between a belated birthday greeting and just a plain, good-old fashioned ‘Happy Birthday!’

Check out our Birthday ecard category and find the perfect greeting for the birthday girl or boy.

Age is Just a Number! Part Deux

Friday, February 28th, 2014

We’re very pleased to announce that we’ve expanded our age-specific range!

Our new designs have been introduced to offer our members more than one option for each age group up to the age of ten, featuring animals and colour schemes to appeal to girls and boys.

For children celebrating their fifth birthday, Katie’s Cards offers a dinosaur themed ecard where different species bob to the music before a big ‘5’ appears in the centre of the frame. Alternatively, senders can choose a design of jumping pigs which is accompanied by a big pink ‘5’ to say ‘Happy Birthday’.

5 birthday boy and girl ecard

We wanted to create at least two options for each age, one which used colours and animals that might be more popular with boys and another that might be preferred by girls. After the popularity of our pink and blue versions of the Cake Game ecard, we thought it would be a good idea to expand our age-specific range in this way.

The Cake Game is an existing interactive ecard from our Birthday category. The platform game involves triggering booby traps to stop the attacking cake monsters attempting to get their hands on the birthday cake. ‘Attack of the Cake Munchers’ has also featured on GameNet where it has achieved over a million plays.

ATTACK OF THE CAKE MUNCHERS

After a few weeks story-boarding and animating, the result gave us designs that are quite versatile. They’re not necessarily just meant for either girls or boys but they achieve what we set out to do – which is offer greater variety for our members to send on that all important milestone birthday.

Check out our other age designs featuring mischievous monkeys and bonny bunnies, plus more in our birthday ecard category.

New Birthday Ecard!

Tuesday, July 2nd, 2013

I’m delighted to announce that we have a new birthday ecard on the Katie’s Cards website. This ecard features an explorer who, whilst trekking through the jungle, stumbles upon some ancient ruins. Engraved within the stone of the ruins is a ‘happy birthday’ message.

Whilst we hope this birthday ecard will appeal to all our members, part of the reason we created this ecard was to respond to customers’ requests for more ecards that are suitable to send to your husbands, brothers, fathers and sons. We revealed some early pencil sketches of this birthday ecard on the blog a few days ago and the card is now ready for you to send here on the Katie’s Cards website.

New ‘Belated Birthday’ Ecard

Friday, May 31st, 2013

You might remember that earlier in the month we gave you a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of one of our ecards. We’re now delighted to reveal that the ‘belated birthday’ ecard is up on the Katie’s Cards website. It’s the first ‘belated birthday’ ecard we’ve made and we hope that the humour of the ecard soothes any bad feelings if you’ve forgotten an important date…

Birthday Band

All our birthday ecards can be pre-scheduled ahead of time so, technically, there shouldn’t be a reason to miss anyone’s birthday ever again! If it does happen, however, at least this ecard will be there to save the day…

It’s Tulip Day!

Monday, May 13th, 2013

Today is National Tulip Day! I love tulips – they’re so bright and bold and come in so many different colours and shapes. Did you know that there are over 3,000 different types?! This image of tulip fields in the Netherlands is so inspiring, just look at those colours!

Since it’s Tulip Day, we thought it fitting that our ‘ecard of the day’ includes some of these fabulous flowers. Click on the image above to be taken to our website where you can watch the floral letters bloom and grow into a happy birthday message…

Who knew?

Sunday, April 14th, 2013

Since we’re often trying to devise new birthday ecard designs, we thought it would be fun to try to unearth some lesser known birthday facts to inspire us …

– Though, to me, it always seems like there are tonnes of birthdays in March and April, about 9% of all people celebrate their birthdays in August, making it the month with the highest birth rate! It is followed by July and September.

'Floral Birthday' birthday e card from www.katiescards.com

‘Floral Birthday’ birthday e card from www.katiescards.com

– Allegedly, the date on which the least number of people are born is the 22nd of May.

– In contrast, the highest number of people are born on the 5th October … 9 months after New Year’s Eve.

– Around eighteen million people sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song every day (though I’m not sure how anyone could work this out!)

Do you have any surprising birthday facts that you’d like to share with us? If so, comment under this post or email your suggestions to katie@katiescards.com. If you know anyone who has a birthday coming up, why not include one of these fun facts in their ecard?

Fun April Facts

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

We’re midway through the month now but we thought we’d share some of our fun April facts with you! The root of this word lies in the Latin verb ‘Aperire’ which means ‘to open’ because it’s (usually) the time of year when flowers bloom, animals emerge from hibernation and birds fly the nest…There always seem to be tonnes of birthdays in April so here are a few fun facts for those born this month:

– The birthstone is the diamond.

– The April flower is the beautiful sweetpea.

– Those born this month are either Aries (March 21st – April 20th) or Taurus (April 21st – May 20th).

– If you’re born this month you may share a birthday with Emma Thompson (15th), Kofi Annan (8th) or the Queen (21st).
