Earth Day 2013 Theme Announced!

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

The Earth Day Network has announced that the theme for Earth Day 2013 will be ‘The Face of Climate Change.’ This theme aims to highlight the fact that climate change is already having significant effects around the world. The Earth Day Network is encouraging people to submit pictures of places, people or animals which have either already been affected by climate change, or which are dangerously close to being so.

You can find out more about Earth Day here on the official website and, don’t forget, we have a brand new Earth Day ecards coming soon to the Katie’s Cards website!

Upcoming April Events

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

April is a little quieter than March was, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not plenty to celebrate:

The Queen’s Birthday (21st April) – This is the Queen’s actual birthday and not her official birthday (which falls in June). The Queen usually holds small private celebrations, though there will be gun salutes in central London. This year is her 87th birthday!

Earth Day (22nd April) – In the Katie’s Cards office, we’re all really looking forward to Earth Day and we released a sneak peek of our first ever Earth Day ecard in our most recent blog post. We’ve also made a donation to the Plant a Billion campaign, which you can learn more about here.

ANZAC Day (25th April, Australia) – This is the day that Australians commemorate those who have served and died in peacekeeping operations, conflicts and wars. Commemorative ceremonies and services will be held at dawn across Australia. ANZAC  stands for ‘Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.’

If you can think of any other important April dates then please get in touch! You can contact us via our Facebook page, Twitter, or by emailing us at

Who knew?

Sunday, April 14th, 2013

Since we’re often trying to devise new birthday ecard designs, we thought it would be fun to try to unearth some lesser known birthday facts to inspire us …

– Though, to me, it always seems like there are tonnes of birthdays in March and April, about 9% of all people celebrate their birthdays in August, making it the month with the highest birth rate! It is followed by July and September.

– Allegedly, the date on which the least number of people are born is the 22nd of May.

– In contrast, the highest number of people are born on the 5th October … 9 months after New Year’s Eve.

– Around eighteen million people sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song every day (though I’m not sure how anyone could work this out!)

Do you have any surprising birthday facts that you’d like to share with us? If so, comment under this post or email your suggestions to If you know anyone who has a birthday coming up, why not include one of these fun facts in their ecard?

Earth Day Ecard Sneak Peek

Friday, April 12th, 2013

We are delighted to announce that we will soon be unveiling our first ever Earth Day ecard! Earth Day is on April 22nd and is an important date in the eco-calendar. All of our ecards are environmentally friendly and we’re always thinking of ways in which we can be as green as possible, so Earth Day seemed to be the perfect opportunity to a create a new ecard to add to the collection.

We hope that each time our Earth Day ecard is sent, a little more awareness will be raised about the importance of protecting our environment.

Spring Clean

Friday, April 5th, 2013

Though it seems (here in the U.K. at least) that spring will never come, we are told that it’s on its way. Besides longer daylight hours, warm breezes and spring flowers, this can only mean one thing … It’s time for a spring clean! For many people, this means sprucing up their house, giving the rooms a lick of fresh paint and getting out in the garden to do the jobs which were put off during the chilly winter months.

New Home Ecard

For others, this means buying or renting a new house and we have some lovely New Home ecards which are perfect for this occasion. Our ‘New Home’ ecards are a fun way of welcoming someone to their new house and, since they are sent straight to the recipient’s inbox, they won’t take up valuable space in amongst all of the boxes! You can view our ‘new home’ ecards and can find out more about becoming a member of Katie’s Cards on our website.

Seasonal Food Ideas

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Here at Katie’s Cards, we’re always thinking about ways in which we can be as ‘green’ as possible. We’re proud of the fact that our ecards are very environmentally friendly but there are tonnes of other choices that we all make every day which impact the environment. One way we can be a little kinder to the environment is by buying and eating as much seasonal, locally-produced food as possible. I thought it would be helpful, therefore, to suggest a few seasonal recipes perfect for Easter weekend:

– In terms of vegetables, spinach, shallots, leeks and, of course, spring onions are all in season. Why not whip up this vegetarian ricotta and spinach lasagna?

– Meat wise, it’s all about rabbit and lamb at this time of year. For a twist on the classic Easter meat, try these lamb and apricot meatballs.

– Rhubarb is also in season at this time of year, and this Easter rhubarb and apple pie would be the perfect chocolate-free dessert for an otherwise cocoa-rich Easter.

We’re very excited about Easter here in the Katie’s Cards office and you can spread the Easter cheer by sending your friends and family members one of our colourful, animated Easter ecards.

Red Nose Day

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Today is Red Nose Day, a day organised by Comic Relief every two years to raise money for projects in the U.K and Africa to support people who are living in dire poverty or who are facing injustice. Many schools and offices across the country will be holding fundraising events and a lot of people will be doing individual events (always silly, often outrageous) to raise money. The day culminates in a night of comedy from some of the best-loved comedians and celebrities. The money raised will go towards various projects in the UK – including ones to help young carers and older people – and in Africa, which focus on women and girls, HIV and AIDs and climate change, amongst other issues.

Green fingers

Monday, March 11th, 2013

March is the perfect time of year to get in the garden and get your hands dirty – the sun is (hopefully) beginning to shine more often and there are still enough rain showers to keep your garden fresh and hydrated. The Royal Horticultural Society provides a helpful guide of what to plant in March in terms of fruit and vegetables. March is the prime planting time for strawberries so if you get them in the ground on time they should fruit in time for summer. In terms of vegetables, it’s the perfect time to plant your potatoes, asparagus and shallots…
