Is Father’s Day less important than Mother’s Day?

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 16th, yet will many people be celebrating it? For some reason, it is often treated as second best to Mother’s Day. Many people argue that, since Father’s Day was officially acknowledged more recently than Mother’s Day, it lacks historical and religious significance. Others argue that it is a purely commercial holiday.

In Thailand, Father's Day is celebrated on December 5th - the current King's birthday. Traditionally, people give their fathers a Canna flower to show their appreciation.

However, Father’s Day was first celebrated approximately four thousand years ago and, since then, it has been celebrated all over the world. We think it’s important to carry on this legacy of showing our dads how much we appreciate them.

So, if you can’t be with your dad this Sunday, why not send him a Father’s Day ecard and let him know that you’re thinking of him.

Father’s Day Celebrations Around The World

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

We have a number of Father’s Day e cards on the Katie’s Cards website and, since we’re thinking of adding more, we’ve investigated some Father’s Day celebrations from around the world for inspiration:

– In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on December 5th – the current King’s birthday. Traditionally, people give their fathers a Canna flower to show their appreciation.

– In Germany, ‘Vatertag’ is said to have been around since the year 1000 and is celebrated today by men gathering together and having a ‘man’s day’ which involves drinking beer and eating lots of food. Hmm…

– In Japan, cards are not usually given on Father’s Day or ‘Chichi no hi’ (父の日). Instead, cologne, sandals and flowers are given as gifts.

How do you celebrate Father’s Day? Are there certain customs or traditions that you honour every year? If so, we’d love to hear from you. We hope that our Father’s Day e cards will suit a range of different tastes but we’re always looking for inspiration and ideas.
