What’s the story behind the Easter bunny?

Friday, March 29th, 2013

For many children around the world, the excitement of hunting eggs left by the Easter bunny is part of the magic of Easter. Rabbits are often associated with Spring due to their fertility at this time of year … but where did the story of the Easter bunny come from? The story of the Easter bunny dates back to the Anglo-Saxons and their celebration of Eostre – the Goddess of Light and Fertility, whose earthly symbol was the rabbit.

German settlers in the U.S.A then introduced the story of the Easter bunny in the 1700s – children believed that if they behaved themselves, then they would be left a basket of eggs. The boys turned their hats into baskets and the girls did the same with their bonnets. We couldn’t resist including this adorable photograph of some little Easter bunnies! We have a funny animated ecards featuring a group of dancing Easter bunnies which you can view here.
