Must Know Tips for a Stress Free Christmas… Yes, in July.

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

Every year, we live under the false pretence that ‘this year’ we’ll be organised for Christmas and swan around smugly while everyone else runs around like headless chickens. But in my case at least, before I know it it’s Christmas Eve and I’m in the biggest last minute shopper showdown of the year… over a chocolate Santa. So, it may be five months early but I’ve come up with a fool proof way to cut costs, budget, and be ready to enjoy the season stress free.

#1 Make a list

Santa knows whats what. Make a list, you don’t have to split it into naughty and nice though, let’s not go overboard. Making a list helps you to distinguish who you want to get gifts for and what to get them. Otherwise we end up wasting money on things people don’t want or buying them more than one gift (heaven forbid). Doing a list like this early also means if someone says they like something in the coming months, you can get it on the list pronto. Voila, always listen to Santa.

#2 The genius monthly purchase plan

I really shouldn’t be sharing this with you or my smug swanning around will be completely negated by the fact that the rest of you are but, I have three words for you, monthly gift buying. If you buy two gifts per month starting from now to Christmas, your bank account won’t suffer in December and you’ll have 12 gifts in the bag!

#3 Online Shopping

There’s always someone who wants something that everyone else wants (me). If you wait until pretty much any time in December it won’t arrive till 2015 and you know it. If you see something at any time, order it – it’s worth it.

#4 Pre-schedule Christmas ecards

No, I’m not kidding. At Katie’s Cards, you could actually order all your Christmas e-cards now completely erase this tedious aspect of the holidays from your mind. You’ll save money, time, postage (yawn) and probably win some kind of Christmas award for sending the best card. Best of all, if you forget someone on your list, which we all do – don’t feel bad, you can pop on the site and send one in minutes, so they’ll never know.

Merry Christmas.

Fully fledged Christmas mode

Monday, December 23rd, 2013

There comes a time in each of our young lives when we learn that Christmas is not a celebration of how well we behave a few short weeks of the year. This unfortunate discovery can often lead to annoyance as we have to try a little harder to make ourselves feel Christmassy.

The point being, feeling Christmassy is something we may have to work at as we get older! Our Pinterest board has some wonderful DIY creative decorating and wrapping solutions that definitely have a boosting agent for that warm, fuzzy Christmas feeling whilst also helping get the family together.

Also do not forget it is not too late to send holiday greetings from our Christmas ecard category to those people you may have forgotten about in the chaos of the season; that is forgotten about until you annoyingly receive a card from them a couple of days before Christmas!

EMBRACING HOMEMADE

Less packaging, recyclable materials and money saving makes homemade an ideal way to go for Christmas.

With four weeks,  lots of presents and a huge dinner to go, we thought we’d give you some more food for thought on creative ways to deck your halls!

Homemade Tip #1

Origami makes an easy, colorful and creative solution to decorating the house! I’ve found an example of how fantastic it can look from the New York Museum of Natural History. For instructions on making origami click here, see below to find out how mine turned out!

Homemade Tip #2

Gift wrapping small presents. These cones are easy to make and still look like high quality gift wrapping with the added bonus of being able to make them from almost any material around the house. I’ve found a link with templates for making them, click here.

Three Beautiful Christmas Images on Pinterest

Sunday, December 23rd, 2012

We’ve been avidly using Pinterest over the past few months and it’s a great site, especially at this time of year when it can be a fun way of finding new festive recipes or DIY gift ideas. I’ve loved collecting Christmas and winter images, it makes me feel so festive and some of them really evoke the magic of this time of year.

As we’re getting closer to Christmas I thought I would share some of my favourite images with you to really get you in the festive mood.

There are so many occasions for sparklers at Christmas and New Year – that’s why I love this image. Warm gloves, cold weather and the crackle of sparklers. Lovely.

The main benefits of sending Christmas ecards this year

Saturday, December 22nd, 2012

Christmas is a busy time. With all the organisation, the parties and the present buying you’ll always forget to send someone (or everyone) a Christmas card.

Jingle Bell Jive

More people than ever are sending Christmas ecards and there are many benefits of doing so:

  • Speed – there is nothing faster to send and receive than an ecard; it is practically instant.
  • Cost – Most subscription fees are minimal and for the cost of approximately two printed cards and postage you can send unlimited ecards.
  • Social – many people enjoy receiving their ecard on Facebook. You can post the card on their wall or send it in a message so they can view your greetings in a social media account they access multiple times a day.
  • Last minute – there are no last postage dates for ecards. You can send it all the way up to Christmas Day (or even on the big day itself!) and your friends and family will still receive it in time.
  • Animated – unlike a paper card, an ecard can be animated meaning it’s fun, dynamic and entertaining.
  • Interactive – an ecard can be a game to while away the hours at Christmas.
  • Sound & music – there is nothing more festive than Christmassy songs and sound effects and Christmas ecards can really capture the spirit of Christmas by playing your favourite Christmas songs as you view them.

There are many benefits to sending Christmas ecards and it’s not too late to send your ecards with Katie’s Cards now.

Five ideas to keep the peace this Christmas

Friday, December 21st, 2012

With the hussle and bussle of visitors and the rush of house guests, Christmas can be a stressful time. When all the family are at home it’s easy for tensions to rise and emotions to boil over.

Christmas Tree Ecard

To help you through this festive period here are our five top tips to help keep the peace:

1. Have a family meeting

Sit everyone down and discuss the plans over the Christmas period. Agree some rules and be clear about what’s going to happen and what’s expected from everyone.

2. Keep them occupied

Being busy usually helps distract kids from bickering. Give them things to do such as peeling the vegetables, doing a quiz, drawing or reading. However, don’t feel like you have to fill all of their free time. There are plenty of distractions at Christmas, so don’t pressurise yourself.

3. Keep rivals separate

Try to keep the people who may cause arguments separate from each other. Make sure they are in separate groups and, if they’re adults, reduce the drink you give them.

4. Be positive

A friendly, positive attitude always helps maintain a positive household. If you’re moody then it is likely they will be too, so keep positive and smile.

5. Random acts of kindness

There is nothing more disarming than being surprised by kindness. So give plenty of compliments and show compassion in the face of a bad attitude. Not only will it make you feel better but it will also help to defuse tense situations.

Finally, you could even use a Katie’s Cards ecard to say thank you and to surprise people with a nice gesture…You can see our full range of thank you ecards here on the Katie’s Cards website.

Our top three funny ecards to send this winter

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Christmas is a fun, jolly time of year. Well, that’s the theory anyway. However, how many cards do you receive that are, if you’re honest, a little bit boring? This year, why not inject some fun into Christmas by sending one of our humorous animated Christmas ecards. We’ve listed our top three funny Christmas ecards below:

1. Turkey Olympics

The Olympic Games was the highlight of 2012 for many people and the Turkey Olympics ecard celebrates this. The turkeys in this card are trying to escape their inevitable festive fate and only some serious Olympian efforts will help them.

2. The Night Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse….’ Hang on a minute, there is a mouse stirring in this ecard. This card follows one mischievous mouse as it climbs up the Christmas tree to hug the angel at the top.

3. Lob the Leader

This political game let you throw snowballs at your favourite (or not so favourite) party leader. You can choose from David Cameron, Ed Milliband or Nick Clegg. You’ll have to be fast though because they duck and hide very quickly. Let them have it!

The Great Christmas Tree Debate

Friday, December 7th, 2012

We at Katie’s Cards are always exploring ways in which we can continue to be as environmentally friendly as possible and it’s something we’ve commented on in recent blog posts. The Christmas tree is an iconic image of the holiday season and features on a selection of our ecards, so we decided to investigate whether real or artificial trees are more eco-friendly.

Christmas Tree Ecard

Real Christmas trees were the clear winner due to the fact that they are biodegradable and recyclable and are often grown on farms aware of their potential environmental impact. Artificial trees, on the other hand, are non-recyclable and must either be left to rot in a landfill or burnt. They are often made in factories with lax environmental rules and transported around the world, therefore racking up a large carbon footprint.

Needless to say, the Katie’s Cards Team was delighted with the outcome and look forward  to once again having that wonderful piney Christmas tree scent wafting around the office…

Pre-schedule your Christmas e cards now!

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

It’s just over three weeks until Christmas. That’s twenty-two days or, alternatively, just five hundred and twenty-eight hours from now. Why not avoid the inevitable Christmas rush and order your Christmas e cards now?

Christmas Presents

Sending your Christmas e cards early via Katies Cards is not only the eco-friendly way to send your holiday wishes to friends and family (as mentioned in our previous blog post) but it also means that whilst others are racing about posting their cards in December, you can be relaxing by the fire and avoiding the icy roads. Simply select the date you want your Christmas e cards to be sent and let us do the rest.

I’m dreaming of a green Christmas

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

Whilst it is easy to become all-consumed by the various festivities taking place at this time of year, we at Katie’s Cards have become increasingly concerned about the impact that the holiday season is having on the environment.

Turkey Olympics Xmas Escape

Turkey Olympics Xmas Escape

Approximately sixty per cent of greeting cards are sent at Christmas. This equates to roughly 1.7 billion Christmas cards being sent each year in Britain alone. How many trees will perish to feed this trade? At least two hundred thousand. Sending Christmas e cards instead of printed cards is eco-friendly, not only because no manufacturing materials are needed to make the cards but also because no fuel is needed to transport them by air or on the ground.

Stag in the Snow Ecard

Stag in the Snow Ecard

Sending Christmas e cards is, evidently, one way you can make your Christmas a little greener this year, but why stop there? Here are a few more handy tips to make your Christmas kinder to the environment:

  • Homemade presents such as chocolate truffles or jams make great gifts and are handy to have in stock for surprise visitors.
  • Try to avoid giving too many battery-powered toys and electronic devices. A huge amount of energy is needed to produce them and their batteries and they guzzle even more when being used.

Opt for a real Christmas tree rather than a synthetic one. Use a sustainable planter and recycle them afterwards. Voilà, you can be eco-friendly and also have the lovely pine smell wafting around your house!

What is your favourite thing about Christmas? 2011.12.21.

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Its the most wonderful time of the year….

Hi all,

I hope you are all well and ready for the festive celebrations this year! We’ve  been incredibly busy with the Katie’s Cards corporate e cards this year as well as doing the normal Katie’s Cards stuff and I have to say that I am very much looking forward to a rest!

I love Christmas time so I am planning to really enjoy myself over this break. My most favourite parts of Christmas are very simple – I love the smell of the spices for mulled wine, the cinnamon, cloves and oranges, the roasting turkey and the christmas pudding. I love the feeling that you get when you give someone a gift that you know they will love, I love the quirky traditions you pick up over the years – we always bake a ham for Christmas eve and although its a bit cheesy, I love Christmas songs being played loudly everywhere you go!

What do you love about Christmas?

Katie x

P.s. Remember, ecards are sent instantly so you have bags of time to send out your Christmas e cards to anyone you have missed off your list or recently added to it!

Here is one of my favourites for you:

Only 9 weeks until Christmas… 2011.10.21

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Picture 1Hi all,

I hate that I have done it – but I checked as I was planning when we could get some of the new Christmas ecards up on the website and did a quick count and I couldn’t believe it. 9 weeks! It was only summer the other day, where has the time gone?!

Oh dear, now I have to start planning gifts, where and who we will be celebrating with and what we’ll be eating. Though there is one thing that I always look forward to – the Katies Cards christmas party! We’re not a big team (as you know) so we often do a joint gathering with the other small businesses who share our little terraced building. There’s only 3 people extra, but it means that our meagre little celebration of 3 turns into 6 (and this year it will be 7 with Racheal here).

Oh dear oh dear. Well, I guess I will start planning this weekend, though no matter when I start, its always a mad rush in the end!

Have you started your preparations yet?

Katie x

P.s. don’t forget to enter the Katies Cards competition before the 11th of November – you could be in with the chance of having your idea made into a Christmas e card as well as a £15 ($20 Amazon voucher!). Please click here for more details!
